Can anyone offer some advice?

I have not yet done a 504 plan for my girls yet. In fact, I never heard of one till I came to this board. My friend and I were discussing it last night and I think it's time we do one.

I found an excellent link on the schools board that someone wonderful posted regarding this plan.

My questions are: How do I start? Who do I contact first? Does anyone have anything that could share with me regarding their own plans?

Also, do any of you feel like you are labeling your child for having this plan? What are the pros and cons of having this plan?

Thanks guys! You have given me more information than my own allergist has!

Gail was right on pointing you to that website. Someone emailed me tonight asking for some 504 questions much like yours.

I would approach the Director of Special Education first for 504 info/form (after explaining that you need one for your child's life-threatening disability) and inquire who the 504 coordinator is, then I would contact the school principal. When I officially got started doing paperwork, this is how I approached this. However, have all YOUR paperwork done--that means having sent in your letter, with your doctor's letter noting the appropriate criterion for 504 designation (Rhonda posted an excellent one that I used under the Schools board). I found a copy of Ryan's blood test to be extremely helpful in our first meeting.
Call to set up a meeting as soon as possible or state in your letter that you would appreciate the principal calling back ASAP. Send copies to all the VIP's involved--school nurse, Spec. Ed. director, 504 coordinator, etc.

I did mine through the school nurse. If I were you that is who I would contact first. I interviewed school nurses before I picked an elementary school for my daughter (now in second grade), so I knew before she started that the school nurse was very allergy aware and would go to bat for us which she has done several times. I have never gotten my dd involved in Special Ed as she does not have a learning disability, and she does not have an IEP, only a 504. I definitely don`t feel getting her a 504 got her labeled. For one thing, none of the parents or other kids have any idea what a 504 is or that my daughter has one. And having a 504 is really important, so that if you want certain things done, it gets put in the 504, and then if it doesn`t get done, there is something in writing to refer to which shows it should have been done. I found that I didn`t have to ask for all that much to keep her safe---peanut free table, hand washing, peanut free classroom. I can`t really think of anything else. The school nurse had every teacher and employee in the school trained on the Epi (even the janitor!), so I was really glad I interviewed nurses before choosing a school. She takes pa very seriously.

Bumping up for all the good advice above!
One thing that has proven to be quite valuable for me when working w/school administrators is to conduct myself in a business manner by expanding my communication skills & by leaving my "Mommy Hat" at home.
The first barrier I had to break down was that of immediately being labeled as an "overprotective parent". Business conduct can help dispell that. However, it is not to say that attempts were not made to dissuade the choice for a 504. Patience & persistence.
"Asking" for safety precautions to be implemented for a peanut allergy works far better & far more often then "demanding".
A 504 meeting can be termed or looked at as a "negotiation". The "giving" by a parent is by demonstrating to the school administrators one's own willingness to work with them. "Volunteering" is very helpful also, & it also provides one an opportunity to perform check ups.
Additional meetings should be expected regardless. It could be as a continuation of the initial meeting &/or to get answers that were not readily available such as: who will be trained, checking policies, where Epi-pen(s) will be located, etc. Patience & persistence.
Role play the 504 w/friends &/or family to check for areas that may need improvement, & as a way to gain confidence. One other thing I found was that whenever I reacted w/"anger" it was actually "fear", in any case when working w/the school that type of reaction can easily be misinterpreted.
Working on a 504 is easy; the difficult part is to present it while trying to control one's own behavior (reactions). Good luck!

We recently started working on a 504 for our ds now 10 going into 5th grade next year.
Up until this point we have tried the verbal approach and then some written instructions and meetings. We had some issues and when I asked the school superintendent if she could provide me with suggestions (I gave her my opinion of options) the school suggested the 504.
I obtained a lot of the info from the sites previously mentioned. I also utilized a substantial amount of information from board created by chris (I'll bump it for you if I can locate again) and the dept of Mass school plan.
Before our meeting I prepared an outline of the information I thought the plan should address (e-mail me off site if you would like a copy) based on all of the info above and a review with some nurses I have met as a result of this allergy. We now have a working rough draft which is being reviewed by our allergist.
