Campus food is improving dramatically

By EVELYN GEZO

Many parents have just dropped off their adolescents on college campuses throughout the country for the first time. Among the anxiety that parents experience, the fear their son or daughter may not be able to get enough to eat or eat smart and have healthful choices while living on campus is always a concern. But today, students have more choices than ever before, and college feeding has become big business for the food service industry.

Many college feeding programs offer a variety of eating venues. It may not be home cooking, but the choices are endless and at times can be overwhelming. Recent studies have shown that students gain an average of seven pounds their first year on campus, a little less than the better known Freshman 15.

A number of changes while living away from home contribute to the weight gain for some students which include a decrease in physical activity, poor sleep habits, late-night snack deliveries, stress and all the food and beverage choices.

Options are plentiful

College feeding is usually a bargain when you consider the services offered today. Most programs have unlimited meal plans for freshmen, and some eating venues are open very late. Dining halls offer grill items, pasta bars, vegetarian foods, vegan options, pizza stations, salad and deli bars. They are eliminating transfats and offer a wide selection of whole wheat products. College feeding is also offering organic food options, local products and eco-friendly paper goods. I was surprised that some progressive campuses even offer cage-free eggs and organic coffee.

And parents, if your son or daughter has a food allergy or other special dietary needs, have them check with the dining services or wellness center. Many campuses have made food selection easier by providing nutritional and ingredient information, and even offer the services of a Registered Dietitian for guidance.

The responsibility for eating healthfully begins with the student, just another part of the maturation process.

But they will still miss your home cooking!

I can attest to that. Having eaten in 2 college cafeterias so far, the choices are endless. It is a constant buffet line, you can eat as much as you want. There's the pizza line, the pasta line, the grill, the section for those that missed breakfast, the sandwich line, the "food of the day" line, salad bar, soda/juice/beverage bar, and then the dessert bar! The list is endless.
No wonder these freshmen put on the "freshmen 15".
