To all,
As a PA individual myself, now I actually can see what goes on behind the scenes. At our BK, they sell Nestle chocolate chip cookies. Problem is, they contain the warning that they are manufactured in a facility that processes peanut products (you know the label I mean). These cookies are baked in the same oven as the eggs, biscuits, cini-minis, and new chicken bagettes. Also they are baked on cookie sheets that are used to bake the above mentioned items. Now, if the person who does the dishes doesn't do that good a job washing or rinsing, then whatever came in contact with those cookies (cookie sheet, tongs or spatulas) can then be transferred onto other items. That's one thing I never thought about before. These restaurants have a ton of dishes to do and not much time to do them in. So, if your children have extreme allergies to peanuts, or soy or anything, I would advise staying home. I myself can't eat anything there, because you also have to take into consideration what the employees are eating and how well they wash their hands once they resume making your food. I hope this helps all out there. I just feel there is way too much cross-contamination to risk it. Just FYI. Good luck to all and I hope they find a cure soon! Especially for those of us who can't even inhale the particles!

Thank you for the insight. It reminds me of my sister-in-law's mother's story - she worked in a grocery store bakery for years. She said that if they had any odds and ends from previous batches of whatever, they simply dumped them into the next batch of whatever was up next. There was no washing, scrubbing, or emptying. This was years ago, but it still gives one pause.

I thought the cookies at BK were pre-baked? We usually go through the drive-thru so I don't know. I might call and ask but as far as I know nestle choc chips don't have any warning label (I still don't use them though) so I can't imagine why the cookies would have one if they're made at BK. Or are they the kind that is a ball of dough that they cook? I'm going to call tomorrow. I hope BK is still safe-it's the only place left near us since wendy's closed. In response to the cookie dough question, at least at our store we get the dough in round wads that are frozen and are placed on the cookie sheets and baked in the oven. It's just like the Nestle chocolate chip cookies you find by the pillsbury cookies in your grocer's freezer, you know, they are wrapped up on a flat sheet (not the cookie dough in a "tube"). In the grocery store, these have a peanut warning as well. Also, as far as a lot of the PA people having trouble with the fries sometimes (even w/o ketchup), I noticed the last ingredient in the fries is "smoke flavoring". When I was in the store the other day, I saw one of those low carb snacks that's like a dried cheese that you buy in a little baggy. It was "bacon" flavor I think, and in it's ingredient statement it listed "smoke flavoring" and then in parenthesis after that it said "peanut extractives". Now I'm not saying that the BK fries contain peanuts, but I myself would have never of thought that dried bacon flavored cheese would have peanuts in it either.... I guess it just depends where the source of the "smoke flavoring" comes from... Just FYI, I have no idea if BK fries have peanuts in them...
I called BK tonight and asked about it and they said they are very careful about washing the cookie sheets and spatulas in between. They did tell me the same thing you did and they also use the spatula for breaking up the ground beef for the chili so we'll avoid that as well. I guess if we go out of town we'll avoid BK for breakfast since the eggs are now possibly not safe. I didn't remember that your post said chicken baguettes either, and I had one tonight. I also had one a couple of weeks ago and my dd tried a bite of the peppers that I took off but she didn't eat the whole thing and didn't have a problem. I'm not crazy about them anyway, so I'll avoid them. I had a coupon for a free one and that's the only reason I got one tonight.
As far as just staying home, I guess I can't see doing that. I don't want to imprison my kids in our home-they would be pretty unhappy then. Also, while I realize you have to be cautious of people eating peanut products and not washing their hands, you potentially have this problem anywhere you go. I'm sure that plenty of the shoppers at walmart, grocery stores, malls, etc have had a reeses cup or similar candy bar in the car or before they arrived or even after arriving. We just can't avoid every place on the planet. Especially if we're travelling, which we do about once a year.
thanks for the info about BK though. We'll be very cautious when eating from there (as we always are when eating anywhere). Unfortunately there are only 2 places in town that all of my kids like and the other one (KFC) is expensive. I cook about 6 out of 7 nights but I really like to have a break from it once or twice a week.
