I picked up a paperback while at the beach - "Breach of Promise" - a legal thriller by Perri O'Shaughnessy. Much to my suprise, about 2/3 into the book, a character dies of anaphylactic shock after eating a dish contaminated with peanut. A discussion between a P.I. and the medical examiner was basically a primer on peanut allergies and anaphylaxis. They talked about how just a trace of peanut can cause anaphylaxis, what ana. is, about epi, cross-contamination, how hard it is to avoid peanuts, etc. I was thrilled to see this exposure!!! The med examiner even gave us a little public service announcement - he said breastfeeding mothers
should avoid peanuts and children should not be introduced to peanuts until they are at least 3!

The book jacket gives the email addresses of the authors - Perri O'Shaughnessy is a pen-name for 2 sisters that act as co-authors. I'm going to write and thank them for this P.R.

I wrote to the co-authors yesterday and heard back from one today. She said that although they do not know anyone personally with a peanut allergy, she has reacted anaphylactically to something they put on fresh apples. This got the authors interested in peanut allergies, which they researched for the book. She said that they never considered the angle that they may be informing people about something so important and were glad to hear that they were helping our cause.
