marina_twinmom, I have asked about all tree nuts as well as peanuts, at our local Benihanas, and was reassured that none are used.

They prepared it separately because they use peanut oil on their salads and I'm concerned about cross-contamination. The service was good and the server was very helpful.
That is good to know. Thanks. There are 2 in Chicago and that we would like to bring our son to one day.

I actually saw their (salad dressing) recipe on their website http://benihana.com/recipes.asp
When I called to confirm if they use peanut oil, they said no. But just to be on the safe side, I didn't order salad for my son & requested that his meal be prepared separately. They were very nice & accomodating. Hope this helps.

The one near me insisted that they don't have anything with peanuts or peanut oil at all. We have eaten there safely twice, now.
The first time our "chef" gave us quite a scare, though: he was cutting off big chunks of something and putting in the fried rice. I asked him what it was and he said "peanut butter". I guess he thought this was a funny joke, for some reason. It turns out that it was really garlic butter. He did not know we had a pa issue, by the way; I had discussed it with someone on the phone earlier.
That took my appetite away very fast. I felt so bad for my dd; this little "joke" was no joke for us!!! We did go on to enjoy the rest of our dinner, however.
