Go early or call ahead and speak to a manager. Cinemas often order their popcorn oil individually. Most of the local cinemas in my area use a cottonseed oil with artificial color and salt in the popping oil, but I've been in theaters where soybean oil was used and others in which canola was the oil of choice.

tidina, Canadian specific, but I'm fairly sure the first time I had to check on movie theatre popcorn the popcorn was AMC Cinema.
I was so happy because the person left the popcorn/candy stand and went and checked with her manager who checked the box and they didn't make me feel like a pita. It was vegetable oil that was used and since here, in Canada, if it's peanut oil it has to say it is, then I knew it was okay.
We also get buttered popcorn no problem.
I've actually found theatres pretty good when it comes to PA. If they're offering some "deal" with popcorn, pop and candy for a particular kids' movie, I've had them sub the unsafe chocolate bar many a time and no one has ever looked at me as though I was an alien (not for that reason anyway ).
Just thinking about the movies has me thinking about what we're planning for July 7th - Pirates of the Caribbean II. We can hardly wait!
Best wishes!

just spoke to a manager at my AMC theatre. they use coconut oil to make the orville redenbacher popcorn and the butter is soybean oil based. i know coconut is not a nut but i dont like to have my son eat it??? she seemed knowledgeable and talked about not knowing if popcorn manufacturer had nuts near popcorn but i believe orvilles popcorn kernels are safe. we can bring our own popcorn and ill get him dots candies at theatre i guess

May I ask why you are uncomfortable with coconut oil?
My son eats popcorn all the time at our AMC theater (we just saw Ice Age 2 Sunday and he had a huge popcorn).
