Uggh. I [i]hate[/i] it when a school staff person says that to me. . . "That's our protocol." One of my pet peeves.
They choose that word because it sounds 'official' . . . as though their practice has some validity). But there's nothing valid about it at all. That's what's so irritating. What they're really saying is, "This is how we've always done it and we don't want to change."

I have dealt with this a few times this year, once with apple tasting and again with frui and veggie tasting. The teacher was to supply the apples, but each of the 20 kids in his kindergarten class were to bring in different fruits or veggies.
My son just turned 4yr last month and we are still working on the rule of him not taking food from anyone other then family. So, what I did was send my son with his own apples for the apple tasting. On the other tasting day I sent as many different fruits and veggies as I could so that he would have something to try. It worked out well in the end.
I agree with the others that said consistency is important, especially at this age.

Carefulmom is absolutely right. Age is an important consideration. If Ryan were 5, 6, or 7, he would only eat the food from home. In first grade the kids made a salad for Easter bringing in all sorts of vegetables w/ lettuce. The kids had to wash their hands and prepare the salad for class consumption. I wasn't comfortable with this and brought his salad from home.
He helped prepare the salad and did everything but eat it. He ate his own that I brought in from home.
Ryan is 10 now and has to begin to analyze situations given all the information available. We present him with options, but he can now make some of the decisions as to how things will be handled.
Lucky me (at least for this year). He has been on the conservative side of the issues that are presented, opting for maximum safety.

For me the thing that would be the worry with 6 year olds and cutting up fruit for fruit salad is their hands. A teacher can wash an apple, peel a banana -- but those hands, where they have been, what they've been touching and if they'll be all over the fruit that gets put into a communal bowl is what would worry me. It isn't like dumping something out of a package into a bowl - measuring with a measuring cup or using a spoon. They'll be using direct contact. Hands. Hand washing. JMPO of course. I probably would also not go with allowing exceptions, but that again is just me and where I'm at this week with my DS's school (this is where I'd insert rolling eyes and a big sigh).
