allergy testing

which type does your allergist use? Mine prefers the CAP RAST, and says it is as sensitive as skin testing. So many of my tests have been totally negative for peanut, and yet it's the only thing I *know* of that I have reacted to. Is it worth doing the skin test? I am really scared of skin testing, but I am thinking it might be worth it to just find out already what the heck I am allergic to.

I am still fairly new to the world of food allergies...however, my son had 2 known reactions to peanut and several to egg (we had no idea what was causing it at first) but tested negative for peanut and egg with the RAST blood test. I took him to an allergist and had the scratch test done and he had DOES have peanut and egg allergy...and his peanut reaction to the test(while safe...as safe as it could be) was very obvious, large and without any doubt an allergy. So for me...I don't trust the blood test at all. Some will say it a will not show up as an allergy unless you have exposure. Well my son had exposure to both peanut and egg and still tested negative. So I am very pro scratch test even though some consider it another exposure...but you need to know what you are allergic to for your own safety. I would rather my son react under the supervision of a professional then at home for some unknown allergy.

Yes, I am starting to think the same. I think IF my other tests come back today negative, then I will go ahead with the scratch testing. My doctor's office is also adjacent to the hospital, so I think I will feel better going there. It's scary, but at this point, I feel like I HAVE to know.

DS's old allergist always thought the SPT were more sensitive than the RAST. We have really differing results between the tests too. On his RAST he is barely above positive at .40 but on the SPT at 4 months old he had a 9mm wheal and at 16 months had 10.5mm wheal.

I would certainly say you have nothing to lose by doing a SPT. Of course ALL the tests can be wrong and the diagnosis should be made based on your reaction history. If you reacted, then you are allergic.

Yes, but I don't know WHAT I reacted to. So I am wanting to do the skin testing to get an answer. I am scared to eat anything until I get some kind of answer, and was hoping skin testing could provide some type of information to go on.

In that case I would certainly go in for a SPT. It really couldn't hurt and hopefully will be able to give you some answers so that hopefully you can start to find a comfort zone. I can't imagine what you must be going through and I certainly hope that you are able to find some answers soon.

Have you talked to your allergist? When is the soonest you can get in for a SPT?

I have just been on the phone all morning, with the local Food Allergy support group, and was able to find another allergist at Northwestern hospital, so I am really feeling glad. The soonest they could get me in is Dec. 1, but the appt is about 3-4 hours, and they will do the scratch testing then. I feel a lot better now. My other allergist just was NOT doing anything, and does not even really believe in the skin testing, because he says the CAP Rast is just as sensitive. So I think I am done with that office, and will go straight to the experts. I just felt like they were so unsympathetic at my old dr. The new one is where they DO testing on food allergy for the medical community... so I feel very good going there. Hopefully I will have some answers. I told her to call me if they have any cancellations, obviously, but I will know more Dec. 1. That means I can relax for my son's 3rd birthday on the 2nd, hopefully!

YAY!!!! Glad you decided to find another dr! I've had the WORST luck with drs lately and sometimes you just have to put your foot down and move on. At least December 1st is only a couple weeks away and that is great that they will do everything at that first visit so you KNOW you will have answers then! Keep us posted on what you find out!

Just wanted to update that they moved my appt up to this Wednesday. So I will get some answers then, hopefully. I told her to still call if there are more cancellations. I am looking forward to some kind of an answer, but still very nervous about the test.

YAY!!! Glad you can get in before Thanksgiving! I'm sure you are nervous but I'm also sure you will be so relieved when it is all over. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you that it all goes well! Keep us posted Wednesday if you can and let us know how it goes.
