How To Force New Labeling?

I am trying to find out how to get an item added to the allergen list of substances that manufacturers are required to list on their products, such as in food ingredient lists.

I understand that this is a very short list of items and that getting something on the list is next to impossible. But it does happen, with political and other pressures.

What I need to know is what the actual process is once you've got a community together that cares about something. What part of the law needs to be changed? What are the goals that representatives need to act on?

What parts of the law deals with labeling? What parts of the law deals with requesting ingredient list additions?

Most importantly: Where can I go for further information?

Any suggestions anyone has would be very appreciated. Thank you!
