Hey there Lana,
We are thinking alike, as usual.
I thought about suggesting to momma2boys that she basically just not deal with the school for right now and only focus on "Rhonda's path to the 504". Don't you think the bad information she's getting from the school is just clouding the situation? Focus on getting the designation first/now... then figure out the detials of the contents later, yes?

Ok guys one more question, I will type of letter today and my principal has a 504 meeting tomorrow and was going to talk to spec. ed director for me. SHould I type letter, attach the doc. gail (or lana, cant remember) about hidden disabilities and have the principal give it to her?
Also is the letter from the dr. a specific one req. 504 or the one that list his requirements from the school?

Remind me please, is the Dir of Sp Ed the district's 504 coordinator? I think it must be...
I think that if you addressed the letter to BOTH the principal and the director of Sp Ed that it would be fine. Yes attach the copy from the OCR. I would hand 2 copies w/ the OCR pages attached~ one for the principal and one copy for the Dir Sp Ed~ and ask the principal if she would mind giving it to the Dir Sp Ed at their meeting today. Or ask her if it would be better for your to mail it? (If you ask, I'm sure she'll agree to take it...)
Yes, I think you will need the letter from your doctor... BUT DON'T WAIT on it. Get this letter done and out now (tomorrow). This is the first step, and the doctor letter is the next.
It willl feel so good to get this done!
I'll be around today... if you want to post your letter I'd be happy to look at it. I'm sure others here will also be happy to give you feedback on it...

Momma2boys,
Were you asked to attend that 504 meeting? Is it a specific meeting about your son, if it is, I would think that you should be included.
Definately do as Gail has suggessted and have 2 copies of the letter and the OCR document attached to both.
As for the letter from the Dr., it is specifically for the school, but make sure that you have the Dr give it to you first, not given directly to the school. You want to make sure that it covers what you need and that it doesn't have anything that will ultimately hurt your efforts, plus you need to keep a copy, or in my case I kept the original and gave them copies.
Include in your request that you are obtaining a letter from the Dr. but due to timimg issues you feel its imperitive that we (the school and yourself) move forward in the 504 process and as soon as your Dr.'s schedule permits you will have his/her documentation to them directly.
Also, do you have any written documentation, such as test results, at home? If you do have anything, attach that as well.
Anything else? Let me know if I can help...
Gail, yes we are on the same page, I know if it weren't for Rhonda's extensive research and links on the 504 law, Cam would have went to school with a quiet scared momma! KNOWING the law has given me more power than anything else.

You would think that the Dir. of Spec. Ed WOULD be the 504 coordinator. In our case, he KNEW he wasn't, but no one knew who really was, so the principal assumed he was the 504 coordinator.
I did not press the issue because everything progressed smoothly without knowing who actually was assigned the title.

sorry i havent responded sooner, busy day. first the meeting is for another child, she just said she would speak to the dir. for me. yes the spec ed dir is in charge of 504. so here is what i came up with. Im leaving out all the top headings and sig. to save time but followed rhondas sample.....
Our son ***** has asthma and a severe peanut allergy. We are writing to ask you for your help in preparing for ****** entry into kindergarten next year. We would like to meet with you to begin discussing his 504 plan.
We are in the process of obtaining a letter form his asthma and allergy specialist but due to timing we feel that it is imperative that we move forward in the 504 process. As soon as we receive the doctors letter we will forward it to you directly.
Thank you in advance for your time. We are looking forward to working with you and all the administrators, teachers and staff members of *********** schools.
Sincerely.
*not that I dont trust you guys with my sons name, I just worry that someone from my area will read this or from my school.
so what do you think? Im not sure if Im going to give copies of test results because they have his old doctors name on them. what do you think?

I think it looks great. Make sure you have the date on it (I know you will!).
The only tiny thought I have is whether or not you want to make mention to the attachment (the OCR letter). I remember Cam saying that she gave it to them w/ a post it saying something to the effect that it was FYI and that they proably already were aware of it... as a way not to apprear ...(what's the word?) threatening?
You could 1.) do that (post-it note), and/or 2.) indicate it at the bottom of your letter ("attachment, 5 page handout from OCR"), and/or 3.) indicate it in the text of your letter by saying something like: "As you undoubtedly know, the Office of Civil Rights has very good handouts for parents who have children with disabilities. I am attaching one 5-page handout about Hidden Disabilities that was especially helpful."
Somehow, tho, I think it would be a good idea to have it documented that you have given them this OCR handout. Just MHO.
Let us know how it goes...

Gail, thank you so much, I was hoping youd read this tonight , I want to drop it off at school tomorrow morning when I drop the kids at school. Im going to call her first and make sure she will do it. I think with her dropping it off and discussing it with her I may get some type of immediate feedback about what her feelings are instead of sitting here waiting.
Again, thanks!

If you're feeling uncomfortable, then wait.
I think as long as you have not signed anything that allows them to contact your doctor that it would be okay to give it to them now. But if you're uncomfortable then wait. It would probably be just as fine to hold off until you get the doctor's letter and attach the lab results.

Gail, I am going to wait. For the reason you mentioned and also Im worried that if they arent familiar with the testing and how results are read they may form their own interpretation of how severe or not it is.
