Herbs That Can Help Your Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune condition that causes painful scaly patches on the skin. Although psoriasis is a very common skin condition, there is no known cure. However, psoriasis symptoms can usually be managed with a combination of oral medication and cream-based treatment.
Now, researchers are starting to discuss supplementing these treatment strategies with natural herb-based remedies. Recent research has linked the following herbs with significant improvements in psoriasis symptoms:
Indigo Naturalis
This herb extract has traditionally been used in a variety of Chinese tinctures and dyes. However, a new study suggests that Indigo Naturalis oil can improve psoriasis around finger and toe nails.
Turmeric
The active ingredient in turmeric, curcumin, is well-known for its anti-inflammation and anti-bacterial properties. A 2011 study used a curcumin-based gel to test the suitability of turmeric for the treatment of psoriasis. The respondents noticed significant reductions in psoriasis flares over the course of the study.
Aloe Vera
Aloe Vera is already used extensively to treat skin irritation and sunburn. A report from the Mayo Clinic found that topical application of a cream, with a minimum of 0.5 percent aloe vera, can reduce inflammation and pain from psoriasis. Remember, your skin will need a break from aloe vera treatment after 3 weeks of use.
Capsaicin
Recent findings from a successful psoriasis treatment study found that capsaicin – the active ingredient in chili peppers – can help heal severe flares. If you do use a capsaicin cream to treat psoriasis, you may notice a localized burning sensation after application. Respondents from the capsaicin study confirmed that this sensation disappeared after the re-application of the cream.
Oregon Grape
The stem and leaves from Oregon grape plants have been used to produce anti-inflammatory powders and skin creams. Results from a clinical study with a 10 percent Oregon grape skin cream showed inflammation reduction for mild cases of psoriasis.
A more recent study has argued that the Oregon grape is the most promising herbal remedy for psoriasis. This conclusion was based on the antiproliferative properties of Oregon grape, which slows down the spread of scaly skin and psoriasis plaques.
