Our school will not go peanut free, only peanut aware. Is this a common thing like they say it is?

Many people think 'peanut

Many people think 'peanut free' just creates a false sense of security and delays treatment in the event of a reaction. My son's last school was peanut free, but parents still sent peanut product in. You can't check on everybody everyday, and simply trust that they remember and comply. Now he is in a 'peanut school' I've realized his care is actually better because it's acknowledged more. Getting a peanut free school is perhaps not where our focus should be. I'd suggest being best buddies with the Nurse, make sure you have a robust plan in place for ALL scenarios (incl. substitute teachers), insist on a peanut free classroom and educate, educate, educate. Use the terms Life Threatening Allergy and Anaphylaxis instead of just allergy and ask others to use it in their 'awareness' correspondence - I think it adds more weight to the message. Good Luck

Thanks hjuc. I agree about

Thanks hjuc. I agree about the false sense of security. I am having the problem with the school saying they are peanut aware, but yet teachers are eating snickers candy bars while helping teaching my daughter, or they serve trail mix in the lunch room and nuts are getting tossed at her. When I approach the school about it, they don't seem to have an answer as to how to help stop these kind of situations.
