I am the director of an early childhood program and would like to know how much of a danger it is to children under 2-3 years of age (who have never had peanut butter) to come into contact with peanut residue?

at that age the residue is

at that age the residue is very dangerous because they still put there fingers in their mouths and toys in their mouths. I've read somewhere that many first time reactions happen in pre-school before they even know they are allergic.

I just found the info on FAAN's website.

"Approximately 3 million children in the U.S. under the age of 18 has a food allergy. Studies have indicated that 16-18% of school-age children who have food allergies have had a reaction in school. In an estimated 25% of the cases, the reaction occurs before the student has been diagnosed with food allergy.

We had my daughter tested at

We had my daughter tested at 18 months - at the allergist - with no previous exposure to peanuts. Because my older brother is deadly allergic. At 18 months, her peanut test came up more quickly and more severely than the "control" test for the histamine that everyone reacts to.
The nurse said "it should take a few minutes... I'll come back to check in about 5 ohhhh. Yeah. Um, the peanut one is already positive."

Something to remember? Some kids are exposed in-utero.

But honestly? Just ask yourself: do you want to be the one making the phone call to the parents from the back of the ambulance?

Just be so careful. I still remember the day I had to dose my 3 y.o. with benadryl and coat her in hydrocortisone and bather her in oatmeal baths for 3 days - because another child had eaten a PB sandwich, then used the slide without washing his hands. She went down once - and the WELTS covered her legs within minutes. Life threatening? No, thank heavens, for her. Not that time. But when you are hoping that they don't turn into weeping sores that cover your child's legs? You learn to bring bleach wipes to the play ground - to leave when parents you don't know bring their kids and there's food.

Just be safe - it's better than sorry.
