Rising Peanut Butter Prices Lead to Increased Popularity of Alternatives

Did you know that peanut butter prices are expected to skyrocket this season? This year's harvest of peanuts was just a fraction of what farmers expected, according to The Examiner. A decrease in planting, along with droughts and record-breaking heat waves, means that peanut products such as peanut butter will become pricier in the coming months.

Peanut butter is considered by many families to be a pantry staple. It serves as a healthy source of protein, favored by vegetarians and others who may be avoiding meat. And of course, it's found in millions of kids' lunches, in the form of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Yet the cost of a jar of peanut butter may increase by as much as 40% this month alone, causing many families to reconsider their purchase.

Although families with peanut allergies avoid purchasing peanut butter and other foods with peanuts, the price increase could affect them too. As peanut butter prices rise, many families may opt for other nut butters or peanut butter alternatives with a similar taste and spreadable nature. Due to the lower availability of peanut oil and peanut butter, expect alternatives like soy butter, almond butter, and sunflower butter to become more expensive or harder to find.
