Food allergies can cause adult acne

allergy-test.jpg

Dermatologists used to think that diet was only marginally part of the problem with adult acne. New evidence, thanks to food-allergy testing, is changing that perception.

A review in the International Journal of Dermatology in 2009 found that some foods that raise blood sugars quickly can also cause acne. Dairy products are also a potential source.

More recent evidence is finding that some food allergies can manifest as acne rather than the more familiar allergic reactions physicians normally look for.

Mild allergies are less common, such as allergies to citrus and some Brassica plants (broccoli), but becoming more prevalent in research. Many dermatologists are now recommending food allergen testing when other sources for adult acne and psoriasis are not apparent.
