Parents of children with food allergies often discover that finding an alternative to cow's milk is one of the trickier parts of living with food allergies. Today, there are many alternatives to cow's milk from which to choose. Parents of children with food allergies are looking for a milk that is nutritionally beneficial, without any potentially damaging ingredients. Technorati recently reviewed the most popular options:
1) Almond milk. The flavor of this milk has been described as nutty, toasty, and faintly bitter. Low in calories, it is fortified with vitamins A, E, and D, as well as calcium. However, it is higher in sodium than other milk alternatives. Also, those who are allergic to tree nuts, a common food allergen, cannot drink almond milk.
2) Hemp milk has a chalky flavor that is also described as strong, fermented, or 'vitamin-like.' Though naturally rich in omega-3 fatty acids, it's not a great source of calcium or protein.
3) Coconut milk has a sweet flavor, and may be found in flavored varieties. This fairly low-calorie milk alternative is low in sodium, although it can be high in saturated fat. Most brands have been fortified with vitamin B12.
4) Rice milk, which tastes like sweet rice, is a good source of electrolytes, making it a good way to hydrate if you're exercising. However, it can be high in carbohydrates and is low in filling fiber.
5) Soy milk, which has been the most popular cow's-milk alternative for many years, has a flavor that is mildly nutty and creamy. It is high in protein, and also contains plant nutrients that may keep your body from absorbing cholesterol. However, some studies have suggested that over-consuming soy, which contains relatively high levels of estrogen, can have negative health effects.
