Your travels & International eating

I'm deliberately posting here, not in the travel forum, because I want solely to ask allergic adults :)

Where are you from and what countries have you been to? How have you found eating while traveling? Do you stick to resorts and chains or do you travel off the beaten path? Please share your experiences as an adult, what kind of treatment your allergy has received, and how different cultures have received the idea of anaphylactic allergies.

I am especially interested because of up coming new travel plans. I'm the type who prefers culture shock to guided tours, and the more I know about food-survival :) the more I can make this happen. So much of a culture is in its cuisine...:)

I have a peanut allergic child but am a fan of Allergic Girl in NYC. She is an adult with numerous food allergies and writes about her restaurant experiences in NYC and vacation spots. am not an adult allergic person, ( have a child with many) but have met a few allergic adults, who all travel around.

sometimes they go hungry , but dont starve!! it doesnt stop them living life to the full.
they just have a differing approaches.

as a family we have traveled to plenty of places, like france, italy, spain and US.

You're not alone - we have 2 kids with peanut allergies and must be careful,
I dont know where you are, but we just opened and ice cream store that is truly 100% peanut and nut free.

Alot of people have come and returned for ice cream cakes for their kids becuse we are safe and we prove it with all allergen reports.

The store is located in Brick, NJ and called Mr. Creamees's Ice Cream, located at 2060 route 88 east.

I have been to Brazil 3 times because my husband's mother, siblings, and extended family all live there. I do a combination of things:
1) We pack about a half of a suitcase full of safe foods for me. So I will always have SOME THINGS on the trip that I can grab-and-go when we're out and about.

2) In Brazil, churrasco (their form of barbecue) is all the rage. And many restaurants only serve the barbecued meats and some sides. We only encountered 1 restaurant that served things with peanuts/tree nuts.

3) The biggest challenge comes from buying food there. The major "American" brand down there is Nestle. You don't see much Kellogg's, Nabisco's, etc. But Nestle has its products labeled with "contains" or "may contains" so I've learned to trust them and have never had a reaction.

4) Oh and my mother-in-law does a ton of from-scratch cooking, so I always felt safe with her food!

Thank you all for your responses. I have a follow up questions!

Are there foods you trust to buy when travelling, even if you aren't so familiar with the brand-- say, dried pasta, rice, etc? (I don't expect to be able to buy pastries or crackers or candies.)

What is your traveling quick fix? I eat a lot of bananas when I travel.

What is the usual type of restaurant you will go to? I remember reading here that someone generally picked sushi as her fall back food, as long as the rest of the menu seemed un-nutty. I was surprised at first, but I suppose its reasonable as sushi is generally straight forward- or at least, very clear in its contents.

I am traveling again to Europe in spring, but will be on my own for a week or so before I meet up with anyone I know. I'm not very worried about food where I'll be alone-- the Netherlands and Belgium, maybe a night alone in France- in Germany and Italy I'll be with friends. But I'm still trying to get an idea of what this will be like for me alone...

I recently became PA/TNA (about a year ago, I am 27 now). One of the first things that I got depressed about was how I no longer felt safe to travel...which crushed me because I love snowboarding in far off locations, beaches, and Asian/European culture.

Now, I haven't cured myself of my fears yet, and I'm still not ready to try Asia, but I will be testing my comfort in London soon. The only reason I am doing this is because I've started with smaller trips (Hilton Head, California, Utah, Jackson Hole) where I spoke the language and knew there was civilization near by.

The things that helps me get through it all without having to worry too much are [url="http://allerenergy.com"]AllerEnergy[/url] nutrition bars. Yes it is true that I may not eat at every restaurant, and I am usually a bit hungry for the duration of the trip, but I know I can bring a box or two of these things with me in my luggage, and then just keep 5 or so in a bag I have with me at all times. They don't fill you up but they do keep your energy up with the bonus of being healthy. A huge plus is they are simple to eat while on a chair lift getting ready for your next snowboard run (my friends actually got jealous that I didn't need to go into a restaurant to eat...more riding time for me.)

Anyways, it doesn't help the fact that culture == cuisine, but it does make it so I can go places and immerse myself in the non-food based portions of culture.
