Time Magazine's Nov. 15, 1999 story
McCain(candidate for U.S. Pres)
peanut research $
There is mention in this article regarding how McCain feels about the sillier items on the appropriations bills and it goes on to mention an example such as $1 million for peanut quality research.
I would like to hear from anyone who has (or can find) information about what he is referring to.
Post a link also to the article on this thread if you can find it on the web, this would help those who have not seen it, or if there is no link available, requesting from Time magazine that they put the page (story) on the web permanently so we can link to it. Most of the time when we request this, the media involved will do so if they are informed of how important it is to us and that it will help many! Sometimes we need to ask for permission from the editor or person in charge of allowing us to use it if they have no way of putting the article on the web. If they cannot put it up so we can link to it, ask if they will send us permission to use it.
I am interested (as you also should be) to find out who is receiving this money and for what purpose it is going towards.
Work on this if you can! Contact me with whatever you find, even if you run into a dead end so others will know what you found so we don't waste time or effort doing the same work again.
It is known by many that the peanut industry is heavily involved in politics (especially those of us who have been involved in trying to make our lives safer), and it is important to know to what extent they are involved, who they know etc..
I hope you understand what I am referring to.
If you have any information or questions let me know.
Keep up the good work! Together, We are making a big difference in the quality and safety or our lives!
As you can imagine, we are very busy here working on many issues and problems. Your assistance will benefit us all. Please help. I am posting this to request your help because together, as a community we can do so much, and we are so busy here that any help you can give makes a difference! Anything you post (and everything you don't want to post) please e mail me also so we can keep it together with the rest of the data on this subject to help us work on this.

I didn't see any mention of pa in the article. Did I miss it. Should we start writing to the Candidate?
Thanks Connie,
If anyone notices the link doesn't work, try to find a new link and please post it, sometimes they are archived on the media companies web sites. You may have to contact them to find it or have them put it back up on the web for us.
It mentions the peanut-quality research in the last paragraph on the first web page which the link Connie posted goes to.
If you know how you can search for the word peanut on the page.
We should find out who asked for the money and who is helping them to get it. What the money is going towards etc.
Keep up the good work!
You could try finding out from McCain's office what this is about. Locate contact info and post it and then be sure to post what you find out so other's don't keep calling or contacting his office until we find out what is going on.

Hi, try this link to a Citizens for a Sound Economy press release dated May 25, 1999 for an opinion on the peanut research bill. http://www.cse.org/cse/nr-tax990525cse.htm
The bill appropriations for peanut quality research are mentioned in the corporate welfare section of the release.
Hi. This is a very interesting site: Citizens Against Government Waste.
I entered "Peanut Research" in the search and this is what I got: http://www.govt-waste.org/cgi-local/AT-cagworSiteWidesearch.cgi
The home site is http://www.govt-waste.org/index.htm is case you can't link to search.
I am happy to see the work you have done on this so far, keep up the good work. There is a lot more to do.
Try typing into the keyword search on the link above the word "peanut" and another search for "peanut allergy".
Post links to what you find so others will realize what we are up against. Many do not realize that there are people out there fighting against us. Many tell us that they cannot even believe that someone would do such a thing, knowing that this could hurt someone.
Join with us to work to make it a safer world for the peanut allergic.
Let us know your thoughts as you realize the fight we are in for our quality of life and safety.

Hi, I found another interesting web site related to this issue. It is to the American Peanut Research and Education Society: http://www.agr.okstate.edu/apres/welcome.htm
Whoa! I think we need to clarify a few things here. The peanut quality research that McCain was talking about has nothing to do with peanut allergy. This money was appropriated to fund research on peanut agriculture.
If you do searches on other crops in the bills that appropriate money for agriculture, you will find that the government regulates and funds almost every major crop/livestock in the United States. Peanuts is only one--they also support cotton research, tobacco research, beef research, you name it.
I am not exactly sure why McCain is against giving money for peanut agricultural research--perhaps because the peanut industry is thriving and should be able to fund its own research--but no matter what his reasons, they have nothing to do with peanut allergy!
Katie
I am glad you mentioned this Katie for those who are not aware.
I was hoping this thread would bring awareness of the fact that this goes on, as well as show the political power of the organizations we often come up against.
I am hoping we find out why the money was requested, by whom it was requested and who helped them put it into the legislature, to find out who has connections and to whom.
This may help many to realize that the people and organizations we come up against are very powerful, and that we need to be also!
If you were involved during the airline issue you would have seen the political power we faced, and would have learn that it effects us directly and often! This is something we need to know and understand as a community.
Some of the southern Senator's etc. are great allies to the peanut grower's organizations.
I am glad we are discussing this situation, it is a learning experience for many.
Don't forget when you post something, such as a link, be sure to write why and how you think it relates to the issue, so others will understand your thoughts. This may help others to learn what they were not aware of, or to show you that you may not be thinking about the situation correctly etc.
Keep up the good work!
