tidina, honestly, dear woman, you are going to drive yourself mad.

You don't need to have ALL of the answers to-day. Trust me.

How are you getting contact information for manufacturers? Doing a search? I'd just keep contacting whatever manufacturer, but, my soul, I do feel as though you're going to go mad.

Either that, move to Canada where we do have great labeling and not as many worries.

CSC-

Just a quick thought. "Research" *is* one healthy way of coping.

It isn't driving oneself mad -- it's fighting back: "I will get life (as least as it pertains to eating or ___) back to what resembles normal, darn it -- PA is not going to take away our fun!"

What you may see as excessive worry (as in the recent thread) isn't necessarily so. In our case, I think things through as completely as possible, do what I can think of to do with what resources I have -- and *then* I let it go. Remember the case of apples thing? I do what I can -- I buy an unopened box. And I let it go -- and we enjoy the apples.

We don't eat out a bunch, but we do have one safe hamburger place, and we enjoy it. DH reminds them about our situation (I have seen a grill worker with fingers in mouth, so the reminder is prudent, IMO), and we enjoy our lunch or supper. I fix the problem I know (grill workers with the munchies), and let it go. You might well think that extra step is unnecessary -- it just gives me a clearer conscience.

All in all, I know, if something happens, I've given it my best. WRT to finding safe products: I enjoy learning/research, and I'm good at it. It's what I have to fight back with. And I enjoy sharing what I've learned over six or so years with local allergy friends, and am the person that gets asked the "what about" questions.

Tidina may end up being that person herself, if she doesn't feel squelched for her efforts. It is different here in the states, as you mentioned. We don't have Dare and Chapman's and Nestle to fall back on, and it is kind of a treasure hunt to find safe stuff that doesn't need to be special ordered and shipped for $$$.

Anyway -- sounds like you've had a rough day, or did lately (the Grandparent thing), and I'm not trying to add to it. I just haven't felt the same level of angst from Tidina's posts that you have, and thought I would add my .02.

It takes a little bit of all of us to make this work, I think. Your Smarties thread helped us out way back when -- even if it did take me the better part of a year to drop the ten pounds I added from my KitKat/Coffee Crisp habit!!!

Take care.

Sue

M's Mom, I hear and understand what you're saying.

However, I don't think going through your house and posting about every single item in it, all at once, is going to help. I think it's going to send one into a frenzy.

I understand what you mean about tidina possibly being the person that is able to provide us with Manufacturer information.

When I was new to the board, my guy was just in school and what I focused on was researching the different policies of the different Provinces in Canada re anaphylaxis. To the point where I could be spoken with about it and have the answer for someone else.

I completely hear what you're saying about tidina, it's just that when you see 10 threads a day about different items, you have to wonder if the person is not getting themselves a bit overwhelmed.

I have also done extensive research in other parts, and always posted about it here, and yes, there may have been a time when it was Manufacturers.

Basically, and what I'm hoping for tidina, is that she won't be scared to death to walk out of her door each day with her PA child.

I'm simply concerned for her sanity. I understand, from asking her different questions in other threads, where she's coming from (new diagnosis), but I really don't want her to be fearful and I also don't want her to be overwhelmed trying to figure out everything in a day.

I'm really concerned about tidina. I'm sorry if my caring and concern came across as anything other than that.

tidina, I sincerely hope that I didn't hurt your feelings. I know that things are very different in America as far as labeling, but just now, I've raised a question about whether or not peanut oil has to be listed in Canada when it's in non-food items, and I've been dealing with PA for 8 years now.

I just don't want you to be frightened. I want you to know that you'll find your comfort zone for you and your son and that you will be okay. Do you understand where I'm coming from?

Honestly, I did not mean to hurt your feelings but I didn't want you consumed by this new diagnosis (and yes, it is darn frightening) or overwhelmed by it all.

I was concerned about you. That's all.

And can I just add that yes, the research you have been doing and posting here has been wonderful, especially once you started posting how you got the information. Wonderful.

Especially the Soft Soap information from yesterday, IMPHO.

Maybe tidina could start a thread of her own with all of her manufacturer's information in one place and people could check in every day to see what is new. I know we have something similar but tidina seems good at this, it might be a good service. We could all add in our letters from manuf. etc.

being overwhelmed is probably my *best* method of coping. Don't know how else to explain it. Maybe it's just me. It's when I'm most efficient and productive.

But Momma Bear, you've never struck me as almost frantic about something (although I know at times you probably have been).

tidina, have you done a search of the boards for Willy Wonka candy products?

I don't want to be unclear and I also know it involves the two borders again. I know that at one time we either we able to buy and then not able to buy the candy - Nerds, in particular. I know American friends sent us some at one point in time but may not be able to send them now.

And unless it really bothers you, threads do get side tracked sometimes.

Did you read the label? Call them, write to them. You cannot depend on our information because everything is packaged in different places for different states and countries. YOUR Walmart is not the same as mine.

I have called on several occasions regarding Wonka candy. I have always been told it is safe, and was confident with their answer (I have also never seen any type of peanut products from them, although they may have a variety I'm not familiar with). I also know that they are owned by Nestle, which I trust with labeling.

Wonka products (ie: Nerds) are usually safe. However, occasionally they have a special promotion whereby your tongue turns blue when you eat the products and you win prizes. When they have this promotion, it is clearly marked on the boxes and a "may contain peanuts" alert will appear.

(even though the peanut alert only involves the actual boxes that contain the candy that turns your tongue blue, all boxes marked with this promotion will contain the peanut alert - for obvious reasons, as if they only marked the boxes that contained the blue dye, you would know which boxes were contest winners)

We have had a few Wonka products. I trust their labelling. I cannot now recall the specific info I received that made me trust them, though. However, I generally need to feel sure a candy is not on equipment shared with nuts of any kind. becca

As said in my previous posts, my son is almost 12 and was diagnosed at age 1.

I have NEVER, that's right, not once called a food manufacturer. I live in the states and we have never had a cross-contamination reaction in all this time. I buy mostly whole foods but also snack items and have always read labels.

We also eat out quite a bit (mostly McDonalds, Taco Bell, local chicken place, Captian D's, pizza places, Waffle House, even I-Hop and Cracker Barrell). I ask questions at new places and re-ask at some places. The only place I messed up was on vacation in an unknown Chinese restaurant, I know - big mistake, ordered him a salad thinking that would be ok. They put "house dressing" on it. House dressing in this Chinese restaurant meant peanuts, thankfully, he only had one bite -- Benadryl stopped the reaction (he was 5 yrs old).

He likes cakes and cookies but will only eat them if I cook them unless they come out of a package and he can read the ingredients.

He likes candy, even chocolate. He eats Skittles, Nerds, plain chocolate bars, caramel chocolate bars and such.

I am not about to suggest to anyone where their comfort zone should be and I do see many posters that are a lot more restrictive than myself. Also, see a lot of "newbies" to the PA life that are trying to find their comfort zone. When new to PA becoming comfortable and finding your comfort zone is a tremendous task.

In a way, I agree with CSC, you could drive yourself absolutely insane trying to feel in control. Right now this may be how Tidina is coping. When the dust settles, hopefully, she will have her comfort zone.

I'm not trying to hurt anyone's feelings. Just sharing my thoughts.

Have a blessed day.

I recently called about the assorted package and was assured they would label for the top eight. I also ask about shared equip. We used them and had no problem.
