my 2 year old has eczema, along with her dairy, peanut and dog allergies. this past week we took her off elidel due to the concerns of the fda panel, possibly linking it to lymphoma. three days after we took her off the elidel, her eczema flared up horribly (she usually only has a patch on her hands and feet) -- involving her face, worse on her hands, etc.
to complicate matters the day before the flare-up, we fed her egg -- we have slowly been adding egg to her diet after her RAST came back at zero for egg (she previously tested borderline on a skin test).
so...the dr. said maybe it's a "rebound effect" from being taken off the elidel...maybe it's from the egg (although some of the eczema was coming back the morning before i fed her egg)...isn't 18 hours after ingestion a long time to have a reaction...she has had about a dozen eggs up until now as well. i have to admit; i haven't seen her eczema look like this since she was around our dog (who is now gone). or the dr. said it could just be a cold/virus making her eczema flare (we've all been sick around here).
what do you think? i get SO frustrated that this allergy/eczema stuff is so inexact!@!!
thanks,
lori
I know, it is SO frustrating trying to pinpoint the cause of eczema flare ups. Is your dd sick now? If so, maybe wait until she's better. See if it gets under control. If not, try eliminating the eggs, see if that makes a difference.
It's such a pain...the only thing I can think of is the process of elimination approach I described above. Perhaps the Elidel was keeping her skin from reacting to the egg??? Good luck. Meg

My son used to break out with his eczema right before and during an infection. We used to call it his barometer showing us when he was about to get a cold...or bacterial infection. I would think 18 hrs is a long period to have a food allergy flare up. Just my opinion...

What did your doctor say about Elidel withdrawal? Is there one? We used .5% hydrocortisone for about a week on my ds when he was an infant to try to get his eczema under control and he had a horrible flareup withdrawal from it. I had no idea that would happen. I've used it sooooo sparingly since.

well, my allergist said that novartis claims that no "rebound effects" have been noted with elidel. however, the dermatologists at children's memorial have said that they do see flare-ups with some children.
we are keeping her away from eggs until her skin clears up completely -- the hydrocortisone has taken most of the flare down already. then i am going to meet with the allergist to see how we proceed with re-introducing egg. i guess this is the only way to truly know. i REALLY hope it is an elidel withdrawal issue. it has been so nice to be able to add a new food to her diet (and she LOVES scrambled eggs).
thanks everyone.

I don't have much to comment about this, but just wanted to send you some sympathy. My son also has eczema and it is really frustrating trying to clear it up and keep it that way. I've tried to figure out what causes it to flair up but this is really challenging, as you know.
We tried several different creams, including Elidel which didn't help him much at all. We are currently using Elocon (generic) and it seems to work the best for him. My daughter (12) also used it when she was young. With all of the bad press lately on medicines, I'm trying to limit what I medicate DS with as much as possible.
My DD also had eczema as a child and hers has improved a lot with age. She doesn't have any FAs, but has bad seasonal allergies. I'm hoping that my son's eczema will also get better as he gets older.
Good luck to you!
