My husband and I are considering a transferr to Seattle, Washington. Our number one concern is our 5 year old PA daughter who is starting Kindergarten in the Fall. How are the school systems in that area? Are there any support groups? Good private schools? We can move anywhere within a reasonable driving distance from Seattle, as my husband will be working at home all but a few days a month when he has to be in Seattle.

We currently are living in Florida, but moved from Silverdale, WA. We may be moving back the end of May 2002. If we do I will contact you and hopefully we can start a good support group there. At least now you have a new law that allows the EMT's to administer the Epi pen and carry them. I am sure you are glad to know this since, as you know hospitals in Kitsap County are very few. The bad thing is there are only 11 states that allow the EMT's to carry them, and they are usually the first to respond to a 911 call. But always remember to tell the 911 people that your child is having a anaphylactic reaction to insure they have the correct medicine with.

Are there any parents of PA kids here from the Tri-Cities? I'm particularly interested in meeting parents of toddlers and infants so that we could form a playgroup. (My DS and DD are 13 months old, and my DS is allergic to peanuts and tree nuts. We're working to eliminate all nut products from our household.)

Nancy Kastner-Klinck, president of the K.D.K. Guild, will speak to our group. Nancy's daughter, Kristine D. Kastner, died of an allergic reaction to walnuts in 1998. Her death led to the founding of FEAST and the passage of legislation allowing emergency medical technicians to carry epinephrine. The K.D.K. Guild raises money for asthma and allergy research. 504 Plans: Seattle School District guest speakers

Notes:
This is the long awaited 504 meeting. Ronnie Bryant, Seattle School District 504 coordinator, and Jill Lewis, Seattle School District Head Nurse, will give short presentations and answer questions about Section 504 of the Americans with Disabilities Act as it pertains to food allergic students. While Ronnie and Jill will only be able to speak from the perspective of Seattle School District, their comments should be applicable to most school situations.
