I just found out that scotch brite has anew sponge with walnut shells. This is very concerning b/c even if you are not buying them, there would be a new potential risk when eating at a friend's house. Below is the link if you want to tell them your concern about putting allergens in their products.

What sponge is it? Was there anything on the label to say this?
This is concerning!

Where did you find this out from? Directly from the company?

I'm curious too since walnut is the one thing we KNOW that dd has reacted to.

This product is real. You can find it on amazon. Scary. Another reason to NOT let your child/yourself eat potluck food no matter if it is supposedly 'safe'.

I wrote to 3M and here is the thread - not good.

Hi,

I was told that one of your sponges may have walnut shells in it. Given that our daughter (along with many other children) is deadly allergic to nuts, this is something we wanted to confirm. We regularly use your products but would have to stop immediately if this is true for her safety. Additionally, we would have to make sure not to eat at any houses that also use this sponge to clean.
Please email back at your earliest convenience with factual information. We

appreciate your response.

Thank you.

RESPONSE:

Thank you for taking time to contact 3M Home Care Division. Feedback from our customers is an integral part of our business and we encourage it.
Please know that we have forwarded your message to our marketing and lab departments.

Thanks for the update. Nice of them to determine that "low risk" and "minimal chance of cross contamination" is good enough for every allergic individual. I think I will just quit using all 3M and Scotch sponges so as not to take a chance but how can we ever eat away from home and be confident that someone didn't use these? I hate 3M right now.

I e-mailed the company as well:

Well, you just lost another customer. It seems as if companies would not add nut ingredients to their products that weren't neccessary in the days of life-threatening food allergies! I just heard about this sponge on a message board and sounds like your company has lost a lot of customers!

Their response:

Dear Faith,

Thank you for taking time to contact 3M Home Care Division. Feedback from our customers is an integral part of our business and we encourage it. Please know that we have forwarded your message to our marketing and lab departments.

Thank you for the link. I just e-mailed the following:

While I know you believe walnut shells are an effective cleaning product, I want you to understand that your use of walnuts as an allegedly effective cleaning product has caused me to dispose of your products and make purchases from you competitors. I will avoid purchasing products from 3M, until 3M stops using nut products.

I will post the reply, if it differs from the replies previously posted.

Please do post the response if you get a different one.

Yes, these sponges are still sold as far as I know... I actually think they are "new".

I received the same response and replied with the following:

It is my understanding that your e-mail to me was 3M's form e-mail response. I will not take a chance with my life based upon your opinion that "the chances of triggering an allergic reaction are extremely low." I am very disappointed that a serious e-mail regarding a life threatening issue only warranted a form e-mail response. I will still avoid buying/using 3M products, and I will continue to request that my friends, family and employer also avoid buying/using 3M products.

I'd be thrilled if I never saw them in this area but it still doesn't address the concern of cross contamination.
