We are traveling to the Outer Banks next month (first family vacation ever!) and I would love any suggestions anyone has of good restaurants in Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills, etc. I know Pizza Hut, McDonald's, and Wendy's are there, but I was looking for local seafood places that are safe for pa kids (and good!). I plan to do my own research, too, and will post about our experiences when we return! Thanks for your help!

We visited the Outer Banks, NC last year and plan on going again in Aug. I called the reality company and found out the nearest Medical Center and had the phone # prior to leaving Pennsylvania. We eat in the beach house for convience since there are 4 small children betwwen my sister and myself. The one morning we were out early chose to stop for lunch, well wouldn't you know it , the resturant uses peanut oil to fry everything. I never take a chance with peanut oil, so I informed the waitress of what she needed to do to insure the safety of my son. He had wanted a hotdog so had her take all precautions with his food. She was wonderful. I may have scared her with my step by step instructions, yet she prepared the food herself, of which I was grateful. So watch out for peanut oil. We also noticed peanut shells on the beach. I know I will take all precautions, including having 4 epi-pins available. I also pack enough "safe snacks' for the trip. NC is beautiful and overall we had a great time. One other precaution the day we were leaving the beachhouse i found a Reese's Peanut Cup wrapper behind the drawer when I was cleaning. I learned to check prior to settling in the house. Have fun. Let's us know how it goes. If you find safe resturants I am interested.

Hi Margaret!

Thanks for your suggestions! We are staying at a hotel so I will definitely check for old wrappers, etc. I never thought of that. I also had not thought of locating the medical center. (Duh!) We haven't travelled since having kids and those are great ideas!

We are planning to have most of our breakfasts and lunches in the room because my younger children are picky eaters but I have called several seafood places and been very pleased with their knowledge and willingness to help. Here's who I've contacted so far:

Mako Mike's: they said everything was okay except the salad dressings and sometimes they have Breyer's vanilla ice cream, sometimes a different brand; they don't use peanut oil or flour

The Etheridge: no peanut oil or peanut flour

Keepers Galley: no peanut anything except some of the desserts

The Black Pelican: has one dish that uses peanut, but has a peanut-allergic employee so is very careful and aware

I will post more as I call them if you would like and will also post about our actual experiences with the restaurants, hotel, etc. (I thought you might like to know what I've found so far before you go!)

Thanks again for your help and have a great trip!

We got home yesterday and had a super time! We stayed at the Nags Head Inn which does not have a restaurant and the rooms were very clean so no food problems with the hotel!

My pa son ate pancakes and biscuits at Millers Waterfront Restaurant; Clam strips, french fries and hushpuppies at the Etheridge Seafood Restaurant; and pizza, broiled crabmeat and scallops, various breads and french fries at Mako Mikes with no problems at all. I brought along safe brownies for the kids so when my husband and I wanted a dessert we got it to go and all ate our own desserts in the room. We ate our other meals (cold cereal and sandwiches) in the room which had a small frig.

I have been terrified of vacationing, new restaurants, etc. but doing the research ahead of time really made it easy and fun! I hope this information is helpful to someone!
