Our Epi-pens expired and so I experimented with one on a firm tomato out of the garden. It was enlightening, if only because my DH was shocked to find out I didn't have to use a bone-crushing force to get the needle to inject. He truly thought he'd have to use enough force to smash the tomato. I can only think what my poor 2 year old DD's thigh would look like if had to inject her. (Not that the alternative is in any way better.) I was surprised at how much medicine actually came out, because I didn't hold it the required 10 second and when pulled the needle out it was still releasing the epi.
So the moral of story is try out those expired pens to get a better feel for what you'd be doing in an emerency. We also showed our 5 year olds what the needle looked like so they wouldn't be tempted to play with one on their own.

And did it make the redness go away?
Hee.
We've used ours on potatoes and oranges and I'm sure if we could get our hands on a nice home-grown tomato...we'd eat it!
Now that our kids are old enough, we have the PA 8 yr old and his big sister practice, too. (And my husband also puts WAY too much muscle into his practice jabs! Must be a male thing!)
