This morning dh said dd was scratching at her neck a little. Later after her shower I noticed her scratching her chest some but didn't even think much about it. Hives never even occurred to me. Tonight she was itching worse so we looked closer and she had hives on her side chest and back. There was a red area on one cheek (on her face). I gave her some benadryl and she was getting ready for bed. I went to put some cortisone ointment on her and they had spread to the other side of her face, above both eyes, across her neck and a tiny bit on her legs. I'm kicking myself for not inspecting closer earlier.

Anyway I can't figure out what it's from. She hasn't had any new foods and nothing from a new pkg. She hasn't spent much time outside today although she did run out to give the cat water, and the people who own the farmground next to us are picking corn so maybe it was pollen? But she was scratching her neck before she ever went outside and dh thinks she was scratching even before eating breakfast. She got worse after her shower but she didn't use any new soaps or hair products and I haven't changed detergents. Yesterday she had a football game and was petting a couple of dogs at the field but wouldn't she have shown signs before now? Also she washed her hands as soon as we got home so she wouldn't have touched anywhere.

It's a mystery.

Anyway I'm going to wake her up later and give her another dose of benadryl (4 hours after the first). Hopefully they'll be gone by morning.

I probably don't have any good guesses - but I wondered if it could be something like chicken pox-ish or poison oak/ivy? I would also go for the corn explanation - it really seems like it must be something super random if she didn't consume anything different. We had something similar with my son's eczema. He played in the yard just like any other day, no new foods or plants, and by afternoon & all that night his eczema was horrendous (and he was miserable)- red & inflamed over his whole body. It makes for a long night, and a lot of worrying. I will keep my fingers crossed hoping that the Benedryl works, and things are better quickly. Please let us know how DD is doing when you are able.

Thanks-I have a feeling it's environmental. You just never know with hives I guess. Thankfully they are almost all gone on her body (not on her face and neck just yet). Hopefully they won't be the type to come and go for weeks. I'll probably call her doctor tomorrow just to let her know.

I hate unexplained hives!!

Heat from the shower usually exacerbates the hives...not surprised they got worse.

Hope she's feeling better, and let us know if you figure out what it was...

My PA son has also been experiencing unexplained hives on his arms and legs. Since we live in Florida and have had a lot of rain from hurricanes, I've thought it was from something in the air. He had also been coughing more. Since last week, he has been on Singuliar and has been 100% better.

How's your DD today? Did you end up taking her to the doctor? Hope things are okay. Fingers are still crossed.

Hope things are o.k. I know what you're going through, we had the mystery hives last week at preschool and I hate the unknown.
Best wishes!

Gale,

How is your DD doing? We had a bout with unexplained hives one time here and it all came down to a virus. Sigh. It's so much easier when it's a cut and dry answer and something that you can avoid the next time.

Let us know how she's doing!

thanks everyone-I just now got online. I woke her up during the night and she had just a few hives on her face. I gave her another benadryl. this morning she was completely hive-free and had no itching at all. I washed her breakfast banana just in case someone had maybe touched it with peanutty hands at the store. No problems at all so far and no itching. She hasn't been outside yet.

yesterday her peak flow reading was lower than normal too. I wonder if excess pollen might have been the cause of all of that-her peak flow is back up to normal today too. And I didn't know that taking a shower would make it worse-I'll remember that next time.

Hello Gale~

My daughter is 5 years old and she has been having unexplained hives on her face, neck, and arms since she ws about 3 years old. They seem to be getting worse with age especially on her face. I have taken her to doctors after doctor. I have been told that it was eczema, allergies, and now doctors dont have an answer for me. She has had every skin and blood that has now made her afraid of doctors. I am desperate fr answers and noone can help me. I wish I had an answer for you.

Is she wearing wool or jewelry? Both do it to me...

Or she is wearing any dry cleaning clothes?

Dryer sheets?

Are you using Glade anywhere in the house?
