We had a friend bring us dinner last night (I just had a baby) and for the kids she brought mac and cheese. Harmless, right? Well, she made the mac and cheese and were were spooning it out on the plates...I had already been checking labels for other stuff she brought (the cookies had 'may contain peanuts') and she asked me if the mac and cheese was ok. "Oh yea, its just mac and cheese, that's fine-he eats that all the time...." but for some reason I decided to pick up the box and just take a look. To my horror, the box read, 'manufactured in a facility that processes peanuts'. !!! I had never even thought to check macaroni before-that sounds so silly, but now I've got to start checking that too. We have never bought this brand before but I never will. My poor friend felt bad that she had brought it over and we had to find something else for my 5 year old son. So, NOTHING is safe-even the foods that you'd never think of!

that is so true. there can be pecans in barbecue sauce, peanut butter in chili and egg rolls, sesame oil in chips and tomato sauce. ive seen it all!!

Oh yea, I had heard of the peanut butter in chili...we just can't escape those darn peanuts! Thank goodness for Sunbutter. Even though my kids won't eat it, Mommy loves it!!

Same here. my son never liked peanut butter so he doesnt want anything like it but i like soynut butter and sunbutter. our big problem is sesame seeds and dining out. the breading with bread crumbs on chicken fingers which contain sesame, the rolls from bakeries with sesame contamination, meatballs with breadcrumbs, again sesame. i also dont trust the shared oil for fries unless its mcdonalds. i want him skin tested again this year for sesame and tree nuts to see what comes up.

What are your children's allergies? My 5 year old son has severe peanut allergy and the last time we took him for testing, he had developed a 1+ allergy to shrimp and flounder (never heard of that one!) as well as various environmental allergies. Peanut seems to be the big one though...it's in EVERYTHING! Does your child have sesame allergy?

I don't think that "mfd in a facility that processes peanuts" means that there are peanuts in the product. What it seems to be to me is a "CYA" warning just in case their manufacturing processes are not up to snuff to prevent cross-contamination.

I've seen this warning on lots of Great Value products, including some bags of flour, sugar and other basic supplies.

With all that said, I would still avoid like you do. However, I do think they are just stick a warning on everything to avoid a lawsuit.

Agreed. "Made in...." doesn't mean it "contains".

We stay away from "Made in..." foods as well, but the title of this thread is not 100% accurate.

Ok, let me clarify...when I say it contains peanuts, I mean there is a possibility that it contains peanuts, and there is a label on it stating so. I should have made that clear. I'm sorry for that error. I was freaking out at the time! Either way, I've read (regarding 'may contain' or 'manufactured in the same facility as') that there is a likelyhood it will actually have a 7 to 20 percent chance of containing that product. We avoid things like that because we feel like it really isn't worth it. I mean is it really worth taking that chance when it could mean death? No way! Just wanted to let everyone else know about that incase it could be missed. I almost missed it!

My hubby just bought some Cheesy Tuna Helper that was Great Value brand-I was getting ready to make it for my son and the label says it was manufactured in a facility that processes peanuts. So, we've really got to be careful with Walmart products. They must make a lot of things with peanuts in them for it to be in the mac and cheese type stuff!
