Some products are great with labeling possible cross contamination from peanuts and tree nuts. I've learned to love these companies. However, how do you know about cross contamination? Are there some brands that are safer than others?

I called the various companies of products that I use to find out about cross contamination. Most of them told me that they will label for xcontam. I avoid generic and tend to buy the same brands every time now. I feel my son is safer that way.

Does anyone allow foods that have labels with statements such as "made in a facility that also uses peanuts"? I have not allowed my PA/TNA son any foods that have had this label, but have questioned it lately (not sure why now, maybe becoming somewhat complacent??) I can justify in my mind avoiding "may contains" and "processed on equipment that also processes peanuts" and like statements. But, if peanuts are used in a facility, and a company has procedures in place to prevent cross contamination, is the food safe? Any ideas?

Thanks

ants mom, this is a question often thought of when so many things have these labels. I have enclosed a link (had to increase the size quite a bit to read) made by a well known doctor on pa which indicates that a study was done which showed very high levels of cross contamination in "made in a facility..."

Can you repost or fix the link? I cannot get it to work :-(

At the moment I am avoiding all food that has the may contain label or made in the same plant label. I initially was not, but this changed very quickly after using a chapstick with almond oil in it. This was a tube of chapstick that I never really cared for, because it always seemed to make my lips worse. After being diagnosed, I put it on and within a minute my lips were burning, itching and around my lips was starting to go red. Almond Oil was the 8th ingredient on the list. I figure If I am reacting to that small of an amount, then I could have big problems with cross contamination.

After this experience, I rethought many things. I am anaphylatic to TN, and was told to avoid PN because of cross contamination. When my doctor told me to avoid PN, I initially questioned him, and when I pressed the issue, he told me to be very careful and to only eat small quantities. After the chapstick incident, I realized how sensitive I am, and decided no more peanuts. This also got me to say no more may contain traces of, at least until I could learn more. However, on the plus side, this is quickly breaking my junk food addiction, as well as walking into the faculty room and grabbing a snack of whatever has been put out.

Thanks for the link. It seems that I will continue to avoid the may contain products.

Next question is are there any companies out there that are notorious for cross contamination, but do not use the "may contain" label? I've gotten used to checking labels, but have no clue what to do if something is not written out there for me to read.

EDIT: I live in the USA if that helps.

Thanks for the link! Very informative. I'll most likely continue to avoid these products.
