"Due to the recent addition of outside contract manufacturing customers (not under the MoonPie brand), we will need to alter our corporate allergy statement to read as follows...'NEW ALLERGY INFORMATION: Manufactured on equipment that processes products containing peanuts and tree nuts. Consumers will notice this new statement on packaging starting in 3rd Q, 2007. Production should commence in 2nd Q, 2008. 90 days before production commences, we will post a more specific announcement on the home page of www.mooonpie.com.'
Well that stinks! We don't find moonpies around here very often but when we do it's nice to have something we knew was safe. I just told dd and she just moaned a little. I think she's getting used to losing options.
I did call this morning. It hasn't happened *yet*. It isn't scheduled to happen for a year. According to the person I spoke with, there haven't been any test runs (ie nuts/peanuts haven't hit the lines to date).
I think it's worth asking them to reconsider. Look what a great niche Nestle Canada has filled. Moonpies could easily shoot for the same market -- they have mini pies that could easily be school treats -- they are currently set up to be vendable -- they are even (I think) *trans-fat free*!
Can't hurt to try...
Sue
*I do have the email address for the person we'd most want to contact, but I'd actually think calling for the email (and then writing) would be more beneficial than just writing, assuming they log the nature of their calls.
Bump this up if you have any difficulty getting the address, and I'll post it.
Sue, please post the address if you have it. We don't see them often here, but they are such a treat for DS when we do. I know he's going to be broken-hearted over this.
Sure: It's toryj@moonpie.com (Tory is male.) His last name is Johnston -- I am not sure about the spelling, other than that it does have a "t" -- so not "Johnson".
I still think calling can have an impact, as well. Snail-mail would probably be the biggest deal of all.
I have to say - I'm seriously having cravings now. We just bought an ice-cream maker, and I'm thinking Moon Pie swirl!
You cannot *imagine* how long it took me to shake the pounds from the Summer of the Case of Safe KitKat bars... Sigh. It seemed like we really had a *duty* to support them for staying peanut free...and I sure did.
The things we do for the sake of our kids!
Sue

I'm so sad! I always have a box of Moon Pies in my boys' classrooms in case someone forgets and brings something they can't have. I sent an e-mail but I'll call tomorrow. Thanks for the information.
