I was just wondering about Tollhouse Nestle choc chips. I ate some of them tonight & I'm having a reaction to the chips I think. There are no allergy notes on them, though on other companie's bags I've noticed "may contain" & I was just wondering if these could possibly cotain any nut product in them.

I've taken a benadryl, but I may have to take another one if my hives & itching don't get any better.

Thanks for any input

I had thought Nestle chocolate chips were unsafe, that they labeled for x-contamination, but I went on their website and it appears the milk chocolate *are* labeled as x-contam, but the semi-sweet ones *are not*. They have a number of new swirled chips, and some are labeled as x-contam. Did you eat one of them?

The milk chocolate list may contain or manufactured but the semi-sweet don't. We have eaten semi-sweet chips with no problems. I hope you feel better soon.

I am still trying to understand the situation with the semi sweet chips for Nestle....
Sometimes the bags have warnings, sometimes they don't.
SIL baked her CCCookies for my DH and I wouldn't let DS eat any.
She said the bag didn't have a warning, but I haven't seen one without a warning for awhile.
Thanks.....

I do my major shopping at one store, but stop for one or two items at several others. I have noticed that some stores take longer to turn over their stock than others. So the new "may contains" bags have been in most stores for a while. But a few stores that turn over their stock more slowly (or their supplier does) may still have older bags without the warning.
I still have a few bags in my pantry without the warning. I had just stocked up for my Christmas baking before the warning appeared. I plan to use those up, since we've never had a problem with them before.

I went on the website and looked at the labels for all baking chocolate by Nestle.

Baking Bars--Made on Equipment....
Cocoa--No Warning
Choco Bake--Made on Equipment...
Semi Sweet & White Chocolate Swirl--No Warn
Milk Chocolate & Carmel Swirl--Made on equip
Milk Chocolate & PB Swirl--No Warning
Semi Sweet Chocolate Morsels--No Warning
P Butter & Milk Choc Morsels--made on equip
Premier White Choc. morsels--made on equip
Semi Sweet Choc Chunk--made on equip
Milk Chocolate Morsels--made on equip
Semi Sweet Mini Morsels--No warning
Butterscotch Morsels--No warning

I thought that it was interesting that one that was actually peanut butter, no warning, but the other Peanut butter one had a warning.

I emailed to see if they could explain why some semi sweet have warnings and others did not. I also asked if they have dedicated equipment or not or if they are doing allergen wash....

I just called their customer service. The rep told me that the semi-sweet chips are made in multiple facilities and that now some are made on shared lines. They clean those lines between batches, but they still put a shared equipment or shared facility warning on those chocolate chips.

She said they're following the same labeling procedures that they have been for a long time, so it's not that the chips have been unsafe and they're just now adding a warning. It's just some new shared lines.

She said that we can go by the label on each package, and that if there isn't a warning, they are not made on shared equipment. Sounds fine to me! I still trust them. I just hope I'll continue to be able to find safe ones. No packages with warnings have showed up in the stores I shop in.

Here are the two replies from Nestle. After the first one, I re e-mailed and indicated that my question was not answered.

Also, do not go by what their website labels are. I was just at the grocery store. ALL Nestle baking stuff in my store, except 24 oz bags of toll house semi sweet morsels have processed on equipment with peanuts labeling. The mini semi sweet chips, the smaller bags of regular semi sweet chips, butterscotch etc. all had warnings.

Thank you for contacting us. We welcome questions and comments from our consumers and are pleased to provide the following information.

Some Nestlé products that do not have peanuts added as an ingredient have "peanuts" or "peanut traces" listed in the last place in the ingredient statement. In some cases products with peanuts as ingredients and products without them are manufactured on the same production line. Since even a trace amount of peanut is able to elicit a reaction in people with severe peanut allergies, we feel it is best to list this at the end of some ingredient statements as a precautionary measure.

We want to help our consumers avoid inadvertent ingestion of their specific allergens of concern by accurately informing them about the product ingredients and by following Good Manufacturing Practices in our factories. All factories using a critical allergen as an ingredient must take all reasonable precautions to avoid cross-contact of products that do not normally contain these allergens and products that do not carry a specific mention in the ingredient statement. These precautionary measures include efficient cleaning of production lines and equipment, strict separation of materials that may contain critical allergens, and formal procedures for rework and returned goods. If an allergen does not appear on the label, the likelihood of cross-contamination contact is so extremely low that the risk is insignificant.

We appreciate the opportunity to provide this information. Your use of our products is valued, and we trust that you will continue to be a satisfied customer.

Sincerely,
Tara Williams
Consumer Response Representative

Thank you for contacting Nestlé. We welcome questions and comments from our consumers.

Please be assured that the packaging will always be the correct information. If our product is manufactured on the same equipment that processed or in the same facility as one of the eight major food allergens it will always be labeled.

We appreciate your interest in our products and hope you'll visit our website often for latest information on Nestlé products and promotions.

Wow. Thanks for the answers. I'm not sure about the chips causing my reaction. I was thinking about it a few days later & I later realized that we had peas with dinner. I've never had problems with peas before, but after dinner my hives & itching got worse. So, it must not have been the choc. chips.

I'm starting to pay more attention to the labels now, as my reactions keep getting worse & more sensitive.

Thanks, again.
