FSA consults on safer labelling rules for people with food allergies
Monday, 21 June 2004
Ref: R919 - 38
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) today starts its consultation on the way new European Union (EU) labelling rules are implemented in the UK. The improved labelling rules will provide consumers with more comprehensive information about the ingredients in pre-packed foods and will be particularly helpful for people with food allergies and intolerance to more easily avoid certain foods.
EU list of 12 allergic foods
Any food can potentially cause a food allergy in a susceptible individual, but just a few are to blame for 90% of allergic reactions. Current rules do not require that these particular foods are always labelled, although increasing numbers of manufacturers are doing so voluntarily. However, in September last year the EU agreed to amend current labelling legislation so that consumers are given comprehensive ingredient listings information. The new EU rules list 12 food ingredients
Now to move on and get the FSA to push for better rules and regulations within the restaurant and catering business!
To quote an article from Hazel Gowland of the anaphylaxis camapign UK,
The FSA has published its strategic plan for priorites until 2010. There is one small ref to allergy,
'we will delvelop by 2006 guidance on use of label statements to warn allergic consumers of the risk of contamination of nuts and seeds'
This is the govenments strategic statement on how to prevent 5-8% of children and 2% of adults with food allergy from dying, or at least suffering extremely traumatic experiences.
another quote from a camapign member and parent whos grown up daughter nearly died after eating a meal containing undeclared peanut, brought in a restaurant.
'Food safty officers spend shovelfuls of money on telling catering staff in restaurants to wash their hands. Yet equally serious messages about food allergy appear to be neglected.'
I will add e-mail addresses later so that UK members or lurkers on this board can contact the FSA later as its very late here and must get some sleep!!!
