Swiss Chalet

I've been eating quarter-chicken dinners at Swiss Chalet since I was a child. One of my favourites.

I checked out their website to see if I could eat any of their desserts. I was surprised to see that several of their desserts (ie: apple pie, cheesecake, etc) are peanut-free!! (although they are not tree nut free). Amazing.. some safe PA desserts!

Excluding desserts, the only products that may contain traces of peanuts are the Caesar salad dressing (which is in a few dishes), tangy plum sauce and the two stir fry dishes.

Here is the on-line site where you can see the latest Swiss Chalet allergy information (including peanuts, tree nuts, sesame, milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, soy, wheat, gluten, sulphites)

We have been taking my PA daughter to Swiss Chalet as well but had a strange experience there about 2 weeks ago. The hostess and manager (who never did come and talk to us) basically said the way the kitchen was set up there was a risk of cross contamination and all DD could have was a chicken thigh which we could then peel the skin off of. No chalet sauce or chicken strips. I am going to go back in there because I think they were clueless or overly paranoid (not really a bad thing but a pain if it's inaccurate). Hopefully there will be someone different to talk to. Also, the Swiss Chalet is with Harvey's so there may be some difference.

erik, I forget what desserts I've checked in the past for the kids and found them to be PA safe. We haven't eaten at Swiss Chalet for awhile, but I found them extremely allergy aware. However, now I have to re-read your post to think about cross-contamination.

Sorry, "may contain" or there are actual peanut products in any of them? Do you know when you go into the restaurant if this is clear on their nutrition pamphlet (I'm thinking they have one?)?

So we have to remember not to eat two stir fry dishes, plum sauce, and the Caesar salad dressing? Or is it made clear somewhere in the restaurant?

It's a queer thing actually - my PA son doesn't order chicken when he goes to Swiss Chalet - he usually orders a burger.

We've tried Swiss Chalet in three different places now in Ontario (Collingwood, Belleville and Toronto) and I've always found that the wait staff were extremely helpful when it came to the PA questions I had.

Best wishes!

Hi Cindy...

There are no peanut products used (but you should always ask too just in case things change).... the Caesar salad dressing is made by an external vendor outside of the restaurant and they can't guarantee it is peanut-free, so that's wehy Swiss Chalet places a warning.

I don't worry about cross contamination since they don't use any peanuts

It's good to check in person at the restaurant as things can change at any time as you know

p.s. yes, you can pick up the nutrition pamplet in the restaurant.. when I went, it was in a holder by the take-out area

When they don't add the cheese, I think it is more like a bruschetta
