Hi fellow Canucks
A Canadian parenting website (Today's Parent) has a guest forum host this week who answered my question about the availability of peanut-free or allergen-aware camps for PA kids in Canada. His name is David Graham, Vice President of the Ontario Camping Association and Director of Ontario's Camp Kandalore. Here is his response:
~~~~~~~~~~~~
There certainly are camps that operate in a 'peanut-free' environment, meaning that they are very strict with their nut policies and do not allow ANY nuts onto their site including anything with a 'may contain' label. Other camps operate on a 'peanut-aware' basis meaning they deal with a peanut allergy by dealing with peanut allergies on a case-to-case basis and while they do not operate on a 'peanut-free' policy, they do restrict nuts in their camp. To find a camp with the policy you prefer, simply ask the director of any camp you are interested in about their peanut policy and they will be forthright with you about their particular situation. Also, your provincial camping association may be able to help you since they may be aware of camps that will fit your exact needs.
He didn't give specific program names, but I'm grateful that he provided direction for contacting the provincial camping assoc. for more detail.
Hope this helps and happy camping!
In Vaughan, luckily they also have a nut free policy at all their camps!
Mr. Graham added this to his response today - he hadn't addressed my question about staff training:
~~~~~~~~~~
One last note on your question, most camps will have medical staff on site who can initially manage an anaphalactic reaction. Nurses and Doctors are not unusual at camp these days! Also, many camps do specific training around anaphylaxis, epipens and ana-kits. These are all things to bring up with the camp directors during your camp search.

P.S. Thanks to river for providing all those links!
Here may be a little late this year. But here's another one for next year---Camp Wahanowin---it's close to Toronto and looks like a lot of fun.

I visited Muskoka Woods Sports Resort this summer. (I used to work there...14 years ago.) They have no nuts and no peanuts in their kitchens...NONE. They do sell a few "may contain" things in the snack shop...but no real nut or peanut bars. The staff seems very aware. I was impressed.
I had received day camp information from both children from the school a couple of weeks ago. Given the rate at which I do anything, I finally called our town's YMCA to-day to inquire about the day camps.
First of all, on the pamphlet, it does say that you are to pack peanut/nut free snacks and lunches. Very boldly, in fact.
I had posted to Going Nuts in another thread (and probably to others as well) that one of the reasons that I wasn't having the kids go to camp this year was that the Y is too far away for Idiot Woman that does not drive.
However, I did luck out and there is one location very close to us, operating at the other school, the school closest to me other than the horror show one my children attended this year, that I almost put them in at the beginning of this school year when I had the difficulties getting Jess through the door. So, not far away.
Anyway, back to camp discussion.
I only have one camp curriculum I can choose from for that one location. If I was able to get to the Y, then, there are about 6 different classes you can choose from.
I called to-day to inquire about registering both children probably for the third week in July month so I can pack in peace.
I did tell them that one of my children was PA. They said that that was not a problem whatsoever, they are very food allergy aware. I asked if the staff was Epi-pen trained or if I would have to come in and do a training session and they said that the staff is trained.
I'll post more after I register.
Best wishes!
