I would really like to hear how you are all handling tree nuts in your schools. My 5 year old dtr is severely allergic to peanuts but has not tested positive to any tree nuts. Our allergist, Michael Young, has recommended that we avoid tree nuts due to the high risk of cross-contamination. For those of you in a similar situation, how have you handled the schools? Have you asked them to ban tree nuts in the classroom in addition to peanuts? My dtr eats in the classroom with other students (there is no cafeteria). I am very concerned as to how the teacher will be able to decipher almond butter, cashew butter, soy butter, etc. from peanut butter. Notes from home are helpful, but what if a parent forgets? Would love to hear your thoughts!! Lisa in Western MA

We met Dr. Young for the first time last week. He was very thorough in examining our daughter and spent a great deal of time with us. I felt he went out of his way to ensure that all of our questions were answered. What really impressed me was that he called me personally to give me my child's RAST test results and to explain them to me. I have called his office since then with some additional questions and was treated very courteously by the nurses. So far, we are very happy and feel it is well worth our two hour trip!
My DS's classroom is peanut free but the kids do bring in their own snacks. I alwyas worry about someone bringing in a cereal bar with almonds. He is also TNA. Honestly, I don't believe the teacher goes around the room looking at everyone's snack. But she did send a note to all the parents not to bring in foods that my son is allergic too. All the children wash their hands before snack time and I tell my son not to touch anyone or anyone's snack. At lunch he sits at a peanut free table. One time before school in Gymboree during seperation time I was lucky that my son cried when I was supposed to go into another room so I winded up staying and I saw a girl with 1/2 a peanut butter sandwhich. If I had not been in that room the teacher at that time would not have noticed it.

I wouldnt think the teacher would KNOW the difference.
I THINK our school does not serve PB/TN products. I know kids are allowed to bring whatever they want, and there IS a PNF table, where Caitlin sits.
We avoid all of them for Caitlin. Dunno what type of reaction shed have, really, from any of them.
Our list of allergies is long, so its just 'bucketed' as 'avoid'.
