Shellfish and coconut??

When I was young, I reacted to peanut butter, and my allergist told my parents and I that if I ever wanted to try a treenut or shellfish that I should be standing in the ER. I'm definately not allergic to peas, soy or coconut oil.

I'm just wondering, in posts when you guys list what you/your kids are allergic to besides peanuts, I rarely see shellfish. Is there a large chance of allergy to shellfish with an allergy to peanut or is that just a myth?

I was also wondering, is a coconut considered to be a treenut or is it something entirely different? I've never tried actual coconut, but I know that people with peanut allergies can have the super-refined peanut oil, so I'd like to know if there's a possibility I may react to coconut without reacting to the oil.

Thanks!

I am allergic to peanuts, eggs, berries.

I have been tested for coconuts but am not allergic.

I eat shellfish a lot with no problems.

If you are concerned about it...have you allergist test you!

I am allergic to shellfish, not to peanuts.
My son is allergic to peanuts, with a possible allergy to shellfish. He ate a few shrimps the other day, and said he didn't want anymore because his mouth was itchy. Yet no symptoms developped.
So I am left wondering if he used this "allergy" as an excuse to stop eating, or if his mouth really was itchy. He's never been tested for shellfish, but he is not nut-allergic.
He also eats coconut without a problem.

Coconut is a fruit, not a tree nut.

As for the relationship between peanut and shellfish, I believe the only reason a PA person has a higher chance of being allergic to shellfish is that they have allergic tendencies. There is no other relationship between the two, as there are between peanuts and other legumes, for example.

Was that totally confusing?

Amy

Thanks, you've all been really helpful! If I do get tested for shellfish and I am allergic, will I have a reaction, or is it a blood test?

Although my son is not an adult with Pa he is a child with PA I do read this section too. My PA son is also allergice to shellfish and seafood. I dont know what the relationship is. He is allergic to peanuts, all tree nuts, shellfish, seafood, soy and sesame. We found out about most of the allergies via the blood test. We found out about the peanuts by accidental ingestion which prompted the vidit to the allergist for the blood tests. Dont knoe if this helps or not. Hope so.
