For those of you with sesame allergy- was it diagnosed because of a reaction, skin prick test or rast test?
My dd sesame allergy was diagnosed on her rast test and the number was very high- she has never eaten it-
I am thinking about getting a skin prick test done to see if it is real-
what are your thoughts about this?
Thanks,
Gwen

Anaphylactic reaction.
My son used to eat sesame all the time until one night he ate a hamburger bun with sesame and, Voila! Hives all over the place. It was confirmed with a RAST test.

I have a newly diagnosed sesame allergy--January 2006--as a result of an ImmunoCap test (blood) that I got for shellfish reactions. I had no idea there was a sesame panel.
I am a Class 2 on Sesame (the same as crab and lobster--and my first serious shellfish reaction was to crab).
I did not believe that the sesame number was accurate. I thought the lab mixed it with peanut because my peanut numbers were nil, and I've had reactions from peanut before. But at that point, nothing from sesame.
The day I got my results I ate spoonful of raw sesame and a spoonful of toasted sesame. Nothing. So I thought it wouldn't be an issue.
But in the last two months I've actually started to react. It's not serious. I get a strange feeling, some stomach discomfort, gas, my eustachian tubes tingle and get a strange sensation.
It's not pleasant, but it's not shellfish . . . yet.
So I avoid. If I go to McD's I ask for a plain bun. We buy wheat bread and not 7 grain. But I can still buy bread--and that's a difference between me and others who are sesame allergic. I'm not ana to it at this point--and hopefully won't be.
I've found a sesame allergy board at allergicliving.com, BTW.
