This is the first time I will be dropping my 6 year old PA DD at a birthday party that is to be held at a nail salon. ( no food, just cake) Any suggestions on what to do about the bday cake? I don't want her to feel left out by not eating a piece of the cake and i am not sure how appropriate it is for me to bring up the PA issue with the birthday parent. I would appreciate any ideas you might have.
Thank you

You have no choice but to bring up the PA issue especially if you are dropping off. Will there be someone at the party that will be able to inject her Epipen if she has a reaction?

I usually send my son with a Krispy Kreme donut or some Oreos to eat instead of the cake. I do tell the parents ahead of time that I will be doing this. It has never been a problem.

You absolutely have to tell the parents, and ensure someone there is willing and able to inject if necessary.

I always make a cupcake and ice it for DS, so he can have something safe while everyone else is eating cake. He is not allowed to eat anything from any bakery, or anyone elses baking. It's just not worth the risk.

You have to inform the parent.
My ds has been to two parties (he is almost 3) and I have had absolutely no problem with the parents ensuring there were no nuts served in food. If it was a problem then quite simply I wold not send my son.
It breaks my heart if th situation arises where he cannot eat what everyone else is eating (ie cake). I always carry "treats" on me to make him feel better if it does happen.

Good Luck!

Talk to the parents. Odds are, they are nice people who will care. They may not "get it" but will care. If it turns out they don't care, you would not want to leave your child with them, anyway, so it's better to know before. Bring a cupcake that is safe, and let the parents know that is what you'll do.
As it turns out for me, I never have to let the parents know--they all know already. DS tells every kid in his class, and they all tell their parents.

I still don't do drop offs with my 7 year old. Actually, most of the moms I know stay at parties, especially if it is in a public place (as opposed to someone's home). Since it's a nail salon, could you just hang out there? That's what I do, and I have never been the only parent to stay yet I bring a cupcake for my PA son, and when they serve the cake I get a plate and put his cupcake on it.

thank you all for your advice. I think I will stay at the party ( I will need to bring along my 3 year old, as I do not leave my kids with a babysitter)
Thanks again!

MimiM - I knew that Oreo's were "safe" for PA, but I didn't realize that Krispy Kreme's were - how did you find out? I thought with the donuts with nuts, etc there might be a chance for cross-contamination. It would be great to know some more snacks to give my DS with the PA.

I have called them myself and they told me that they used to use nuts years ago but stopped because so many people had nut allergies. I'm sure that they know that this gives them an edge over Dunkin Donuts.

Once, I called them in a panic because I saw a box of Krispy Kremes in a local store that looked like it had a nut topping on it. I stared at the box for several minutes and I would have bet anything that they were nuts. Well, I called and the guy told me that they are simply a candy crunch that is made to look like nuts but there no actual nuts in it!

They do state that they can not vouch for their suppliers but it seems that, from the following discussion on another thread, this is most likely a CYA type of statement.

We along with, as you will see, many others trust that Krispy Kremes are safe. My son has eaten them so many times and has never once had any kind of reaction.

Hi Austin's mom - we've found that Krispy Kreme's are safe in our area ONLY if you buy them from the KK store - the grocery store kind can have cross-contamination.

It's certainly always best to buy them from the actual Krispy Kreme store but I must say that the ones that are sold in our local stores are packaged at our local Krispy Kreme store and then delivered to our grocery store. They are sealed shut and I do consider them safe.

On another note, I would never buy Krispy Kreme from an open donut case such as at a convenient store or any place selling other sweets on the same trays.

Six year old girls in a nail salon? I'd rather not, safe cake or not. Six is too young in my estimation to start influencing them with manicures etc.
I'd beg off for some reason or other and do someting special with my daughter during that time.

Hi Mimi - yes, you're right. I was talking about KK donuts that are packaged at the supermarket as being at risk for x-contamination, not ones that were made at KK and sealed.
