Peanut-Free/Nut-Free Directory
Our directory is intended as a resource for people with peanut and nut allergies. It contains foods, helpful products, and much more.
My daughters principal decided to make the school peanut free due to my daughters peanut allergy.
You can read the responses on the website wthi news in terre haute indiana. The Channel 10 news came to interview the principal. I thought she really did a great job of explaining her decision but people aren't to happy because their kids can't live without peanut products for 7 hrs mon. thru fri. Maybe you can go look up the website in yahoo search. I haven't been there, I don't care to go since they are talking about my daughter.
But it would be great if some could look it up and post on the website. Its a chat forum on wthi news in Terre Haute Indiana. If someone can find the web addy and post it on here that would be great. If not I'll see if someone in my family can get it.

oh my... my wee one's not even crawling and the thought of sending him to school scares me. some of those posts were cruel. i hope it is going better
Well ok I went and read it, wish I hadnt but I did. Can't beleive people can be so cruel.
Yes, we go to the pizza hut and sporting events and even the popcorn festival. We ask questions like what kind of oil do you cook in and we don't allow her to eat baked goods. Pizza hut we don't allow her to eat the cookies. She can eat her safe snacks such as hershey bars, dubble bubble gum, etc... at the ball games and such. I asked the other day about the new dunkers and asked if I could see the ingredients label so they brought it out for me to read. It was safe.
I did not ask for this peanut ban. It was the schools decision.
I have homeschooled my daughter since kindergarten. We tried 3 months of it but it was just not safe. Since than the school has been educated on this allergy. She is now in 6th grade.
Everytime we would drive by kids playing in their yards my daughter just would watch them as we drove bye. My heart ached for her knowing she wanted that and needed friends.
Our IGA store is setting up a peanut free table to help parents to know whats safe, I thought that was good of them. I have also made a list.
Anyone else had to go through this? If so how long did it take to simmer down?

I am terribly sorry about all this. Living with a severe peanut and tree nut allergy myself and being in college is hard enough. Peanut or tree nut dust in the air and my tongue and throat start swelling up. Some people are so inconsiderate about things like this. I wish you and your daughter the best of luck.
I am so sorry. This is probably one of the biggest reasons we homeschool. People only care about themselves-sad but true. When I was growing up we were taught to have respect for others, but that just isn't being taught anymore. People don't care about others and they don't take responsibility for their actions (I don't mean all people but dang, a lot of them are this way anymore). I cringe at the thought of my dd having to interact with these monsters when she gets older. I hate to wish bad things on people but if these jerks could experience what we go through maybe they would understand better.

You say people only care about themselves, and it is the truth. Are you actually saying that you do not care about your health and your daughters health more than you care about the health of another person? We all look out for ourselves and our children first. It is our survival instinct. I have experienced the trauma of being rushed to the ER as well as taking my baby to the ER because of a reaction. However, I am not asking, nor do I expect anyone and everyone to change the way they eat or where they eat it because of our allergies. Why are you and your child so special that the rest of the world should not enjoy something because of our allergies? Would you be so supportive if your child's school wanted to ban other foods due to other child's allergies to it?
Get down off of your high horse and take responsibility for your own and your child's allergy. Please do not make the rest of the world try to bend to your will by banning any foods, especially ones that are healthy.
How terrible!
Luckily our dd goes to a private school where the parents have a big say and I am sooo lucky, it is a fabulous school and all teachers have had anaphylaxis training and they take PA very seriously. I have had no problems at school with her PA.
Hi,
I am having a struggle right now as well as this is my son's first year in a public school, 1st grade. I wish you the best of luck and hope it calms down soon. I saw someone posted about pizza hut so I went to their web site to see if anything had changed. I did see warning on their sauce for PA and several other things for either peanut or treenuts. Wanted to post the link:

Pizza hut has actually gotten worse. I am pretty sure that before, it was only the red sauce, white sauce and the pepper sprinkles that were a possible may contain. Now it is those (although the pepper sprinkles are not even listed anymore) and also the beef, pork and ham toppings.

last time I checked their website just about every ingredient used to make the pizza had a may contain, as well as them using peanut oil to coat the pans. I almost went to the emergency room the night before a good friends wedding because I had pizza from pizza hut. I only had one slice cause it tasted kinda nutty to me.
I'm so very very VERY sorry for all that you are going through right now. I just can't believe and don't have words to express how much I just don't understand such complete ignorance and lack of compassion of other people. I just don't understand someone not being able to put themself in someone else's shoes and even consider what they would do if it were their child.
Your child has every right to go to school and be safe and feel safe. Don't pay attention to what the ignorant parents are saying, they truely are clueless. They complain because they can, they complain because of ignorance. Your child is what is REALLY important and I commend your school for the changes they have made to keep her safe. Stay strong, and don't waste your time with all those comments, in the end they mean nothing.

I feel for you. Your school is not the first to do this, many private schools do. I think when the school is private (and religion based) its probaly a tad easier, as people are a little less self-centered. As a public school teacher, I was promoting this idea even before my child developed a peanut allergy. I know schools are governed by the states, but the federal government needs to take action to ban peanuts from schools nationwide. There are to many children with these allergies to ignore their safety. I think it will only be a matter of time before a lawsuite hits the Supreme Court and a decision for our children's health is made.
That said, I went to the discussion board and left a very long winded post.
Additionally, thank you to whomever posted about the pizza sauce. I am knew to this and did not realize that people actually put peanut (whatever) in the sauce. Something else to worry about.
you had a reaction to pizza hut?
ive been PA for almost 6 years now and my boyfriend [who pertends to have a PA for the sake of me] works at pizza hut and when he did his training they said they were a peanut-free company.
perhaps it was just his branch. im sorry for your reaction.

On the Pizza Hut website they have a list of foods w/ allergens. On all of the sauces under Peanut it says:
Products are prepared in common equipment which may contain this allergen.
It says the same for peanuts AND tree nuts for many of the toppings and 2 of the tuscani pasta dishes. It is not a shared facility but separate equipment like other pepsi sites. I think your boyfriend's training was faulty or outdated.
eta: here is the form:

Also when this first came out almost 2 yrs ago, many people here tried to contact pizza hut and never got replies. The ones that did finally talk to someone were told that there was no way to know which branches had the 'possibly contaminated' ingredients and which did not (or maybe they all do).

You're not alone - many kids have peanut allergies and must be careful,
I dont know where you are, but we just opened and ice cream store that is truly 100% peanut and nut free.
Alot of people have come and returned for ice cream cakes for their kids becuse we are safe and we prove it with all allergen reports.
The store is located in Brick, NJ and called Mr. Creamees's Ice Cream, located at 2060 route 88 east.
If you dont live nearby - please spread the word. Thanks
I know that I am going to catch some grief for what I am about to say, but someone has to say it.
Most of you parents out there talk and talk about people only care about themselves because they are not going out of their way to make the earth a "Nut Free" planet! Please people.
I suffer from food allergies. My two daughters, ages 9 and 7 years, suffer too. I have gone into anaphylactic shock on more than one occasion, so I know how bad it can be. When my oldest daughter was 15 months old, she almost died because she could not breathe. "I KNOW HOW BAD IT FEELS!"
What I do not get is why you think that our schools, parks, restaurants and every other public venue should outlaw peanuts. I am now 37 years old, and through proper education, (Thanks Mom and Pop) I was prepared and knowledgeable about what I could and could not have. My daughters have that same knowledge. I protected them, and also taught them how to protect themselves. You parents ALL need to do the same thing.
The world does not owe you or your children anything because of this genetic set back. There are other people and children out there who have so many more problems as well as more sever problems. Do you see parents of children allergic to strawberries trying to ban them from schools? NO
Listen up... As a parent, YOU are responsible for making sure that your children are safe. Banning nuts from schools is not going make that happen, only you can.
I know what I am talking about because I am a sufferer, and I have seen my own suffer. It happened once, and because I make sure she is educated about this, it has not happened again.
If you are worried, make your kids a lunch. If you are paranoid, home school them. Either way, let it go. There are not enough people allergic to make a difference in our society, and though it feels good to vent and get some empathy and sympathy here, seriously, nothing is going to change.
Foods that people are allergic to are here now, have been since the beginning, and will be until the end.
"ACCEPT THIS!!!"
I agree with some of your statement, I Am Annie. I don't think that every public place should be peanut free. I do think that a peanut ban at school, at least through elementary grades, is a good idea. My daughter is 4 years old and I talk to her about her Peanut Allergy often. She knows where her EpiPens are and what they are for. But she has a few developmental delays that would make it difficult for her to tell someone if she were having a reaction. I have shown her pictures of peanuts and I always tell her to never take food from someone unless I say it's okay but just a few months ago her friend gave her a PEANUT! We spent that night at the E.R. I just think while our kids are young and still learning we should let them go to school without worry. It's a tough topic, for sure. I definitely don't want to put her in a bubble and I am pretty sure that if she goes to a school that won't ban peanuts I will make sure to inform all the teachers and parents and students the dangers. I won't ask for anything special. I will just want them to be aware. Of course, I haven't been faced with that situation yet so it's hard to say....
I wish my school was peanut free when I was growing up. Kids would put their peanut butter sandwiches in front of me until I left the table. Congrats on a peanut free school. Regardless of the harsh words from people who don't understand the allergy, you should be proud of your accomplishment.

I'm so sorry. It's really awful to hear about things like this. I don't see the logic behind someone's lunch being more important than someone's life. I have a peanut allery, and I know what it's like to live with one. It's definately not a constant fear, but it is a subconcious part of my being. I guess I can't expect everyone to understand what it's like, but all I've ever asked is for common courtesy. I really hope all works out for the best!!! I bet this will blow over and people will get over themselves. Good luck!
