Safe \"alternative\" flours

I called Bob's Red Mill today and inquired about the safety of their flours for peanut/treenut and soy allergies and I was told they weren't safe to use. I have sent an e-mail to see if I get the same answer. I am on a quest to go gluten free for my dd to see if she is indeed gluten intolerant and i know from experience that baking with just brown rice flour doesn't cut it. I found a flour mix on an allergy website that calls for a blend of white/brown rice flour, tapioca starch and potato starch, but all I can find for tapioca and potato starches is Bob's brand. Any suggestions?

Try contacting Arrowhead Mills or Hodgson (sp?) Farms. I've not called myself, but they do offer a variety of alternative flours.

I called Hodgson Farms and they do make a white rice flour, but all equipment is shared, including soy flour. They do wash lines and discard the first 50 lbs of product though.
Arrowhead is virtually the same procedure except that they told me they actually test for residual offending proteins. They make a white and brown rice flour. We do use their gluten free baking mix with no problems.

I am sure you have already looked into this but just in case -
I pulled out the catalog I recently got from The gLuten Free Pantry and they do have a baking ingredient section. HOWEVER, when I calle them a few weeks ago they said that most of the products could contain nuts! So you will need to call them and question them thoroughly. Their web site is difficult for me so I have better luck looking at their catalog.[url]http://www.glutenfree.com[/url]

It maybe helpful to check into the missrobens.com site. Those products are researched and labeled for most allergens, altho you might want to double check with the actual manufacturer for an update. Some products are by Miss Robens and some are not. I noticed a lot of stuff in the catalog that were gluten free.

Do people use the Miss Robens flours or ENER-G flours without any problems? I am thinking about ordering the white rice flour (Miss Robens) or getting the ENER-G white rice flour from the store? I am just so fed up with Arrowhead Mills and there changing of answers on cross-contamination. I have a HIGHLY allergic little guy - wheat, egg, milk and nuts...Thanks.

you might want to call Ener-g to make sure, especially if you're dealing with a tree nut allergy. They make a lot of tree nut items and about 2 yrs ago they told me they don't use any dedicated lines. At that time they also had peanut items and I *think* they discontinued them all but I'm not positive about that.

I have thoroughly been researching alternative flours for the past 4 months since my 15 month old is rice, wheat, oat, barley (?), and now possibly canola oil as well as everything must be pn/tn free since her sister is pa allergic. Anyway, this is what we use and I feel totally confident in the products -
Amaranth flour, cereals, crakers, flat breads - Nu-worldamaranth.com Pn/TN free and even their spices thet stand behind as safe.
Quinoa flour and pasta and hot cereal - Quinoa company - most big stores and on-line. Do a search and their on line store will come up. Pn/tn free facility.
missroben.com - I use only their products and feel totally safe with THeir PRODUCTS.
Ener - G - I am confident in their wheat/gluten free flours. I have spoken to them many times and they assure me they are safe and no peanuts in facility since 1998 and the employees can not even have pn/nuts for lunch.
We buy sweet potato flour from specialfoods.com - costly but I cant find it anywhere else. They specialize in allergy foods and have many other flours that cant be found anywhere else. Very intersting site.

I hope you're right-I got this email March 1st, 2000. They are giving people conflicting information if they told you 1998:

[i]Hi Ms. Willy:

You ask an excellent question. We produce 4 products containing
peanuts.
Ener-G Granola, Ener-G Granola Bars, Peanutbutter Cookies and Egg-Free
Peanutbutter Cookies. Peanuts are on of the focal points of our HACCP
Program. If you do not know HACCP, HACCP identifies critical control
points in manufacturing. In food production control of such critical
control points helps assure safe product.

We are in the process of eliminating the peanuts from our Granola and
Granola Bars. This is going to take another 3 or 4 months, and
considerably longer for these reformulated products to become available
on
retail shelves.

We are considering eliminating the Peanutbutter Cookies and Egg Free
Peanutbutter Cookies, but are reluctant to do so because they are
excellent
sellers.
However, I think we will have to eliminate them.

Our bakery is a handshop and we wash the equipment before doing a new
batch.
However, I cannot completely guarantee that their will never be any very

slight cross-contamination of the peanutbutter to another cookie.

Our breads will never have cross contamination with the cookie
production as
different production equipment is used in addition to the washing
between
batches.

i got a good response from Ener-G on using their Rice FLour and Egg Replacer. My son is egg, wheat, milk and peanut allergic. ALthough, i just ordered online at Miss Robens the rice flour and the pancake/waffle mix. Thanks
