A place called "Rita's Ice Cones Shakes and Other Cool Stuff" just opened near us in Reisterstown, MD. From what I can tell, they are PN/TN free. I stopped by before they opened yesterday and the guy said that they serve nothing with nuts in it and no nut flavors. He even brought out the cartons that have the ice cream mixes. They serve only Chocolate and Vanilla and according to the label, no nuts! the only toppings they use are rainbow and chocolate sprinkles and according to the label, there were no nuts in them either. Granted there were no mention of shared equipment but given that these ingredients are packaged for this one company only, it seems to be safe. Does anyone know about this company? There are several locations in NY, PA, NJ and MD. The website is:

Just got an e-mail back on this today - and I also called and spoke to someone at the Rita's main office. He confirmed that their are no peanuts/nuts in any of their products
- although if you are dealing with eggs or milk allergies the custards would not be safe. The only possible chance of x-contamination issues would be if an employee was eating something with nuts while serving the ices - which I think is possible, but not likely. He also said if his child was peanut allergic, he would feel very comfortable with this product.

That kind of a risk exists anyplace and is unavoidable. I feel comfortable enough to bring my kids there. We haven't gone yet but maybe this coming up Thursday after my son's kindergarten graduation!

Been to Rita's many times. Love their Mango flavor, myself. PA daughter enjoys the cherry. Little chunks of real fruit in it,kinda frozen like, so the blueberry is a little strange tasting for the kids. DD is also allergic to some real fruits so we have to watch which flavor she chooses.
Very refreshing!

Wow! The store locator on their website isn't working, so I'll have to call them on Tuesday to find the one nearest us. I'd love to bring DS there for a summer treat (OK, I'll admit it - I have my eye on the Camppuccino Cream cream ices!).

DS is home from school today due to an injury , so we took a ride to the nearest Rita's to get out of the house. What a treat! The cream ices are fabulous - more satisfying than regular ices, but more refreshing than ice cream. I wrote them a letter thanking them for making such a great product.

It's a bit of ride from our home, but worth it. We'll definitely be going back.

Thanks for the heads up.

Amy
