People seem to be reading the initial post on the "tide, bounce and downy" thread, and then don't realize the situation has been resolved.

If you look on Page 2 of the thread, you will see Proctor & Gamble themselves posted about which of their products contain peanut oil and which do not (only Downy Calming Mist contains trace amounts of peanut oil and they are going to replace it with a different oil). If you or your child is reacting to scented laundry products, it is likely a fragrance allergy reaction - switching to an unscented, dye-free detergent should help.

Hope this helps stem the panic! I know I panicked, too, when I read the initial post - check out Proctor & Gamble's post - they are a very helpful company.

Cayley's mom,

Good idea to post this here.

Just thought you might want to know that they sent me a reply to my e-mail which I'm copying below:

Hi Kathie.

Thanks for contacting Procter & Gamble.

We appreciate the concern you have about the safety of our products. However,
we do not make a laundry product that has peanuts or peanut oil in it. It is
required by law that if product contains peanuts, it be stated on the package.

Once again, thanks for visiting www.pg.com.

Interesting that they say that if it contains peanuts etc. that it must be listed on the ingredients.

Is this different because we're in Canada?
Do they even sell Downey Calming Mist here?

Just curious!

Thanks for posting the email, Katiee - it should clear the situation up further EXCEPT - I thought allergy labelling was voluntary in Canada!

I know it's voluntary in the U.S. and I also know that our government is much closer than the U.S., to making allergy labelling mandatory - but I had no idea it had been passed yet!

This issue keeps popping up - does anyone know the definitive answer??!!

So just curious -- are Downey dryer sheets safe or should I be looking for something more "wholesome"???

As promised, we have some information to share with you about our P&G products and peanut derivatives. In addition to all of our fragrance-free laundry products, the following laundry detergents and fabric conditioners contain no peanut-derived ingredients.
Tide (all versions)
Gain (all versions)
Cheer (all versions)
Era (all versions)
Dreft (all versions)
Bounce (all versions)
Ivory (all versions)
Downy Care (all versions)
Downy Wrinkle Releaser (all versions)
Downy Enhancer Invigorating Burst

Of all our Downy versions, only Downy Enhancer Calming Mist contains trace amounts of peanut oil in the fragrance. This oil is present in the fragrance in minute amounts which is then further diluted during the wash so it should not represent any objective safety concern. However, we understand why you want to reduce all risks to your family. We're currently working with our perfume suppliers to eliminate peanut-derived ingredients from Downy Enhancer Calming Mist. We'll keep you updated, but it will be awhile since reformulating a perfume is not a quick process.

Our perfume suppliers could probably explain to you more easily why it's a tough, time-consuming job to identify all fragrance ingredients but I'm going to take a shot at it. Perfume formulas can be made up of 300+ ingredients. Some of these ingredients are compounds of other ingredients so it becomes a very complex trail to follow and decipher. To add to this complexity, each perfume formula is a highly guarded secret of the manufacturer and access is very limited. Considering all this, the speed with which we received this ingredient information is amazing and a testament to the commitment of our scientists and perfume suppliers to you, the users of our products.

I hope this reassures you and helps you make the best decisions about the products you use in your homes.

Hope this helps! Skin rashes could also be caused by any of the above "fragranced" products, even if they are peanut oil free, so if skin rashes are a problem, switch to one of the "free", such as Tide Free, fragrance-free products listed above.

Thanks Cayley'smom - the list helps, but I may still stay clear for a while, try something else and see if there's any change.

Re Labelling in Canada:
It is my understanding that manufacturers are required by law to include on the label if there is peanut in any form in a product (food). I believe warnings re cross-contamination (the "may contain" type) are voluntary! I know this pertains to food. In Canada we really need cosmetics and laundry products to have full ingredient labels too!
