reaction to goldfish

I know there is an old thread out there about goldfish crackers, but it seems it was never settled whether they were safe. The reason I am asking is before we found out my 13-mo son was pa, I tried giving him goldfish crackers. After eating only one, he would violently vomit. My three-yr old loves them, so there were several incidences where my pa son found a crumb, ate it and vomited. He's not allergic to anything on the label. Has anyone else had a reaction to goldfish? His doctor said he could just have an intolerence to one of the spices used, but now that I know about the pa, I wonder if there is a connection.

Well, I have contacted Pepridge Farm (I don't know how to spell it) twice. The first time was in August 2000, at the time of that whole mess when they put in the FAAN newsletter that their snack mix was to contain peanuts. That time they sent me a letter saying that their Goldfish crackers were made on peanut/tree nut free lines. The second time I contacted them was several months ago when I asked if the cookie-type Goldfish crackers (the cinnamon, honey, etc.)are made on a peanut/tree nut free line and they said yes - ALL Goldfish crackers. So I allow my PA/TNA son to have them and so far so good. I know regular Goldfish crackers contain Anatto which a lot of people seem to be allergic to - could that be what your child is reacting to?

We've been able to give Duncan Goldfish crackers without any problem. We usually get the parmesan ones - I think that Annato is used to color the cheddar ones. Perhaps you could try the other flavors so that if your PA child does get a crumb, maybe it wouldn't make them sick? Hopefully, anyway. I've also been told by Peppridge Farms that the goldfish crackers are on peanut/nut free lines.

My PA son, who normally vomits to peanuts, did not vomit to Goldfish crackers, but he did get a very bad diaper rash. His cousin (who is allergic to brazil nuts, but not PN) also had a similar diaper rash after eating Goldfish when he was younger.

My son eats lots of regular cheese and other things containing annato and has never had any problems and has no problems eating Cheez-its, just the goldfish and I can't figure out why!
