Here in L.A. we have a radio call in show at night called "Loveline." I think it is syndicated so some of you might get it also. Loveline is run by Dr. Drew and Adam Carolla. They counsel people, mostly teens, who call in with sex or drug problems. It can get pretty funny at times.

Last night Adam was complaining he could not get peanuts on a flight from L.A. to Vegas. They then both went into a rant about how the wishes of a few control the needs of many. Dr. Drew said that PA people should just stay out of enclosed spaces (airplanes) and they treated the whole PA subject with derision.

DS called upstairs to see if I was listening. He was so angry. I got on the phone, redialed about 100 times and finally got on the air.

I was very calm, very quiet, and pretty well spoken if I do say so myself! The main thrust of my call was to remind them that because they are on the radio they have a responsibilty and a wonderful opportunity to raise public awareness of something as frightening as PA.

I told them that laughing about PA was not going to help anyone. I detailed a few of DS experiences and they were quite surprised to hear anyone can be exposed to peanuts in the air! I really think I may have made a difference with these guys.

They of course thought they had to tell my son to carry epi pens and to stay away from peanuts. I assured them that DS is fully prepared to deal with his allergies but if people on the radio find this funny then that makes DS job of protecting himself even harder.

It went well. Before I got on they said they were going to "make short work of this woman." I was tempted to hang up I was so scared but I held my ground and when we ended the call we had come to some sort of mutual understanding.

They admitted they understood how serious PA can be and how difficult it is to manage. They denied they were making fun of PA but they admitted it is much more difficult for DS to be safe than it is for them to give up peanuts for a 25 minute plane trip!

As soon as I hung up DS rushed upstairs to congratulate me. DD called immediately from college to say she had heard me and she had her hand on the phone to call the station when she heard me introduced and realized she did not need to call, her mother had taken care of it.

I suppose some could argue that DS could have handled this call himself but frankly he's fighting the battle every day. I do what I can to pave the way for him and everyone else with PA.

Kick a*s Peg!

And as far as DS making the call, it is often much more effective when it is someone slightly removed who deals with it. Kind of like the difference between a Jew vs. a non-Jew dealing with antisemitism, or a Muslim vs. a non-Mulsim dealing with anti Islam sentiment. Did that just make sense?

peg: way to go! i used to listen to rush limbaugh every day before my two PA girls were born. he used to poke fun at the moms of PA kids who were fighting the airlines and such. at the time, since i didn't have a good understanding of PA, i more or less agreed with him that they "just shouldn't EAT the peanuts!" i sure couldn't figure out what all the fuss was about. it would have really helped educate me (and lots of others) then if someone like you had called in and spoken calmly and concisely like it sounds like you did. i'm so glad YOU made the call and not ME. your approach was probably much more likely to be well recieved. i find myself on the defensive (either that or becoming a total wimp and backing down completely). there is never a middle ground for me when trying to discuss PA with those who don't understand. bravo for you! i'm proud! you inspire me. joey

Thanks folks, I appreciate the support.

I am constantly amazed at how the people on talk radio deride PA. It seems to be open season on PA on the radio. I've called stations before but this is the first time I've gotten on the air. Usually I just get so upset and angry they won't put me on. This time I was just so calm and collected I was so proud of myself.

I'll do it again the next time it happens.

Thanks folks.

Great job, Peg! I was actually so surprised to hear that they did that. Though these radio shows are always making fun of something or someone and walk the lines of taste and respect, I had always considered them to be fairly level-headed when it came to real health concerns, like HIV, STD's and just plain old hygeine stuff, given the nature of the show. It really surprises me they did not recognize the correlation! They certainly do make fun of people but it seems to me usually people making really poor choices with their sexual and emotional health, and as if they hope to reach a hip, young population with their humor.

I might think some emails to enlighten them might help as well, especially PA as it might relate to intimacy. I only catch the show by accident now and again, but I sure wish I heard you on there! So bummed I missed that. becca

What a tough situation-- live on the air, double teamed, scarcasm, etc. Way to keep your cool. Thanks for successfully making points that they heard and acknowledged. I'm celebrating the victory!

Good for you Peg! I wish I could have heard you. No need to worry about ds not making the call himself, IMHO. I think its great for us all to make a difference whenever we can. Good work! Miriam

Good for you, Peg! It sounds like you really made a difference. And the fact that it was on the radio means you reached a huge number of people.

One thing about your post touched me so much: when you said that your daughter had been on the phone trying to reach them and then she heard you and realized that mom had taken care of things. After the recent unpleasantness on this forum, that just made me cry. Because that's what parents are supposed to do, isn't it? Good job.

Exactly Kim. I was so proud to be able to do this for all of our children. A very small thing but each small thing adds up eventually.

I was even prouder to hear DD was calling the radio station to defend DS also. I wish I could have heard what she would have said!

Hey Peg, YOU ROCK!! You go girl.

Congratulations on staying calm in your efforts to get your point out. Knowing myself I would have been in tears and yelling.

Give your daughter a big hug from all of us for thinking of (or trying) to call in to the show. Isn't it great how our non pa children protect their brothers and sisters. It doesn't matter their ages.

Just think of everyone that you reached because of that show. Especially the teenagers that listen to the show. THink of how many were educated last night.

It is unfortunate that Dr Drew and Adam started it out negatively, but I feel God was on our side tonight and wanted you to get the word out to your fellow Californians and anyone else that sees or listens to the show.

best wishes,

Renee
