I'm considering buying one of the pretty beaded medic alert bracelets and was wondering if anyone could share their experiences with them. Are they too fragile for a 6 year olds 24 hours a day use?
She has a sterling silver medic alert bracelet and after wearing it for almost 5 years there is no medic alert symbol on it any longer.
Since I enjoy making beaded jewelry is there a place where I can just get the medical tag?
Thanks.
My four year old has a beaded one and a silver one. She uses the silver one most of the time and saves the beaded one for special occasions. We ordered both of them online.
There was a parent in our play class that wondered if the EMT's would even pay attention to the "pretty" bracelet. I asked my daughter's allergist and he seems to think they would. There is still a medical emblem that can easily be seen on it.
I do think a sports band would probably last the best for a very active child. I've been considering one for my daughter--at least for the future.

Check out this site. We have ordered from them several times. Maybe you could find something "pretty" without it being too fragile.

I just ordered--finally. I had been meaning to get him an ID for years. He really liked a couple of the designs, so I think he will be happy to wear it.

My 10 year old daughter switched from the standard silver one to the beaded one in May. She never takes off the bracelet. It has survived softball and theatre camp with no problem. When we sent her to a week sleep away at a girl scout camp we did switch her back to the silver one. I think in most 'normal' situations the beaded one is going to hold up.
I just ordered one yesterday for DDs birthday. IO was assured by the rep that they are made for kids, and can survive not being taken off for kid activities. I'm just sad they only have 6" and 7" sizes- DD likes her bracelets loose, so I don't think she'll get more than a year out of it. i hope they make other "pretty" bracelets.
I am sorry, but I have a question that may sound kind of stupid. My girls do not have a medical bracelet yet (I am always with them) but now that they will be going off to school I plan on getting one. I checked out the web site that one of you put out there and I found some that the girls would like to get. My question is how much information do you put on them? Do you just put severe peanut allergy? do you put your phone number, address and stuff on it? Sorry, still new at all of this. Thanks
Hello,
My daughter is also 6 years old and VERY hard on medical bracelets. She has gone through 5 silver ones in 4 years. We currently have a beautiful one with sterling silver beads and lobster clasps. She has been wearing it 24 hours a day for several months. It has held up great. She does take it off to bathe and to swim. We ordered from Laurenshope.com. We had a minor problem with the engraving and the customer service was great in getting it resolved fast. They do sell the medical tags alone for $16 but only after you have purchased your first bracelet. I will definitely order from them again.
Medic Alert. Period. Thats ALL who I recommend. I trust them. They help with what to put ON the bracelet, in terms of verbage...
I would not want anything else. It took a LONG time for us to order one for Caitlin (not denial - she was just always with us).
School started, we felt it necessary. Period.
They are the best of the best, IMO.
Prited out the forms, asked her which one, and she chose it herself -- the purple one with musical notes.

Thanks for all the input. I think I may go ahead and order one and hope it holds up.
I've often thought about them being too pretty to be noticed as a medic alert bracelet.
I'm sure no one wants to hear this but my brother worked for several years as an EMT and he said he never once looked for a medical tag. And never saw any of his co-workers. Very sad!
As far as her current ID bracelet it reads "CALL 911 FATAL ALLERGY TO PEANUTS.TREE NUTS. Treat with EPIPEN JR." It doesn't note her name or any personal information. It does have the medical alert phone number.
My dd's birthday is 8/8 and she will be 7. She has been asking me about a "pretty" medic alert bracelet.(she's been wearing the standard Medic Alert silver one since 18months old and the only time it comes off is to change the chain to make it bigger). I did some research on this website and went to the recommended sites. She picked out a few that she liked from Laurenshope and also Medic alert and I printed out a photo of it.
Today we went to our local Fire Station/Police Station. We spoke to 3 EMT's and a few firemen and I asked them IF she had one of these on, would they know it was a Medic Alert bracelet. They said that honestly it wouldn't grab their attention as a Medical Bracelet when it looks like normal jewelry. They said they are trained to look on the wrists and around the neck for any medical jewelry, but at glance the "pretty" ones don't look like it. So I asked them their honest opinion and they told me to stick with the silver. Madeline was crushed, but after the EMT's talked to her she understood. They did say that IF we ordered a pretty one, to bring a photo of it to the station and they would post it with her name and photo on it so everyone who works at our town would know what her's looks like. Seems like a good compromise.
DH wants us to stick to the silver, but he certainly isn't a fashion guy. I think IF we order it, we will bring the photo and her photo to our station and help to get the word out.
Maddie's Mom - After reading your post I think you may have swayed me to stick with her silver bracelet.
After looking at all of the different bracelets I was beginning to wonder if the "pretty" ones were getting so popular that maybe EMTs would be on the lookout for them and not just pass it off as regular jewelry. I guess not.
I love the fact they were so willing to work with your daughter. How kind of them to offer that.
Someone on this board had suggested this site for bracelets. Lots of cute ones!!!!

DD (age 4) - allergic to peanuts, some tree nuts, egg whites, dogs, cats, environmental allergies
My dd has been wearing a silver "ugly" medical ID bracelet for the past 4 years.
She is now 7 1/2 and she really wanted a special bracelet. My firned makes all sorts of jewlery and she made her a very nice, simple beaded bracelet. DD is so happy. We used her old ID band part.
This part takes up the whole front of her wrist!! It is impossible to miss the emblem!
Kids have such tiny wrists, the beaded part is in the back( for the most part)
I am happier for her- as long as she has to wear this, why not make it pretty!
I see nothing wrong with getting a girl a bracelet that will make them happy.
If EMT's and Paramedics are trained to look at the left wrist for bracelets- they will see that these are medical bracelets in a second!
Mom of dd age 10- allergic to peanuts, tree nuts and sesame
I just received Jimmy's bracelet from N-STYLE ID (there's a link on this thread). I only ordered a couple of days ago. There was a slight mistake with the "jelly" bracelets, but I called and will be getting the correct ones shortly, and they were very nice about it as well. The service is really good. He did get the right one of the sturdier kind. It looks "cool" enough that he wants to wear it, and I imagine he would conveniently "lose" it if he didn't like it.

A friend of mine makes jewellry also. she made my dd a pretty bracelet using the medic alert plate.
She put it on before going to school - it broke before morning recess.
My friend made another, and it too broke almost immediately.
She was using lobster claws. I went out and bought some spinners for her, and she made a third one. Again, it broke.
Seems the the "plate" twists on my dd's arm and breaks the clasp.
I gave up and ordered her a velcro sports band from medic alert. $40. CND
She loves it ALMOST as much as the pretty beaded ones.
I was sad cause they were soooo pretty.
