President\'s Choice Blue Menu Items - Mini Chefs

I do have to contact President's Choice re this but I wanted to bring it to people's attention so that in the mean-time, they can check the product.

President's Choice has come out with a new line of Blue Menu products. The kids' ones are called Mini Chefs, which includes a Kraft Dinner like item, cookies, and crackers.

I purchased the Mini Chefs Teddy Bear Arrowroot Biscuits.

The label clearly says "may contain traces of milk, egg, soy and sesame". Good labeling IMHO. Also, very clearly marked Product of Canada.

Then, in looking at another Mini Chefs' item this week, I believe crackers (again, Mini Chefs geared towards kids), there were no "may contain" warnings. In looking at this item, I thought, okay, perhaps there are no "may contains" (can happen, right?), but then I also saw Made in the U.S. - Imported by Loblaw's.

Now, as I say, I do have to contact Loblaw's to see if they are labeling the products imported from the U.S. as well as they are labeling the products in Canada, but I just wanted to bring this to people's attention so that you can check before you buy the product, if the product is made in the Canada or the U.S. and how well, you, yourself, feel the products are labeled.

Contact information (mostly for my aged brain and so I can throw the box out )

Hi,

I called about the multigrain prezels (no warning on the package) They are made in a plant that has processes peanuts, I didn't buy them. There is a cheese cracker for kids that does have a peanut warning on it.

Q's Mommy, did you happen to notice if the pretzels were manufactured in the U.S. and imported into Canada?

That's the difficulty I had when I bought the one cookie/biscuit (teddy grahams basically, but arrowroot, so plain, but shaped like teddies) and then looked at a box of crackers on the shelf above where the teddy cookies were. The labeling was quite different. No "may contains" at all.

That's when I spotted that the teddy cookies were made in Canada but the box of crackers with no warnings of "may contains" at all had been made in the U.S.

I know it's important that we check labels all the time, but if you check the label on these products, and don't look further, they really do appear to be safe. KWIM? Especially when they are from the same line of products (the much touted Blue Menu).

So, with this line, as with other manufacturers I've found in the past (like Pillsbury), it's really important to check to see where they are made to determine if the labeling is okay or not.

I don't know if the pretzels were made in US or Canada, I am guessing Canada since I avoid most US products. As I stated in another thread about no name products, I always call for info regardless of the label.

Q's Mommy, thank-you.

The cookies that I bought were really well labeled IMHO. That's why I was so shocked when I looked at the crackers and saw no "may contains" at all. Then, I saw the "made in the U.S." and imported by....

I appreciate your answer, thank-you.

Cindy, I called about the cookies and they were fine but keep in mind, you still have to call each and every time with Loblaw's because they often change suppliers. This is something the CSR confirmed when I called.

Seems to me there ought to be a better way, all to confusing to the kids in particular.

The confusing thing for me is if they are labelled really well (ie- may contain sesame, etc), then why do they want us to call in every time?

erik, yes, it is rather confusing. I understand that Loblaw's or President's Choice outsources. But when they come out with a whole new line that they're promoting, you would think that perhaps it *could* be consistent.

Now, I wasn't like katiee and I did trust what I thought was really GREAT labeling on the cookies and I bought them. They were labeled "may contain" for at least three things.

It was only when I looked later in the week at another product - the crackers - that I saw what *might* be the problem - made in the U.S.

In looking at No Name oatmeal this week also, but separate from Blue Menu items, the boxes had little stickers on them that said "may contain milk products". So, the little stickers are added AFTER and not part of their regular labeling. That way, they don't ruin a pre-printed box if they don't have to.

And yes, katiee, it is confusing to the children and now I'm kinda ticked off that I bought them. Now, Jesse, he's been label reading for 5 years now (Em, I'm not so sure about), so if he saw me re-check something he had already eaten, he would be fine.

I just wish they could be consistent.

I'm glad you called, katiee.

Okay, what I don't understand is why aren't there allergy labels on these products (ex. multigrain pretzels). It would make sense since starting in 2006 there has to be allergy labels and these 'Blue Products' are new this year. As for stickers as warning labels, these would make me nervous. I would always wonder if the wrong sticker was placed on the wrong box. I guess I am not very trusting

I am also disappointed that the mini cheifs chedder crackers has a peanut warning on it
