My PA/TN allergic son is attending safety camp this week where they will order pizza tomorrow for lunch. I called the pizza place and found that they use peanut oil on their pizza!!
I called the camp and asked if they would have all the children use Wet Ones if I send them so my son isn't exposed to the peanut oil. They say they have sanitizer.
I don't believe that sanitizer would be effective on peanut protein. Is peanut oil a contact risk after it has been baked on a pizza?
I'm thinking of even keeping him home from camp tomorrow. This is a safety camp with police officers, EMTs, and firefighters. I know he would get the right care if something was to happen. I would just like to avoid the "something might happen" part of it. This is the first camp I allowed him to go to as I thought he would be safe.
I don't think the place is a chain. It is called Pizza Mia in Billerica, MA. I have never heard of peanut oil on pizza before. Stupid place!!! It's not even listed on their online menu.
When I signed my son up for the camp at the last minute on Monday, the official that I spoke to on the phone said that they have been ordering pizza every Thursday from that last place for the past 2 years, but he just learned a couple of weeks ago from a parent that peanut oil is used on the pizza.
As in some of my posts back in January, my son has required the EpiPen 4 times that month at school. We believe the first time may have been a contact reaction, but the rest of the reactions turned out to be anxiety over a possible reaction, that actually led to his eyelids, mouth, and throat swelling.
I'll have to decide whether to send him with a note for his individual counselor to make the kids wash their hands or maybe keep him home. He just got done with his therapy for the anxiety. Either way I'm going to cause him more anxiety with this.
This happened to us after we ordered 4 pies for the family and when we went to pick up I asked about allergins and found out that they used peanut oil. I told everyone to wash their hands before touching DS. I'm sure not everyone washed their hands, but the ones who played with him did.
I would think washing hands would be smart if they want to avoid contact problems. They let them wash their hands if they take a trip to the farm to wash germs off but they won't do it to keep a child safe? At least wipes. I think it is nice that you are providing the wipes.
either you keep him home, and do something super fun with him.
or send him with his own food.
personally i'd keep him home and take him to the movies or some other fun thing to make it a mommy and me day.
but dont stress out over the decision. if your child is that sensitive to his situation you dont want to stress him out also.
how old is your child?
good luck

It says on FAAN website that hand sanitizer is not effective in removing peanut residue.
Hi Sacena,
I highly recommend they use Sal's Pizza, also in Billerica, MA. Their pizza is very good and they DO NOT use peanut oil! They make pizzas for our school lunch program at a really reduced cost so I'm sure they would give the camp a good deal for all those pizzas. My PA DD has eaten their pizza with no problems. If you do decide to recommend them, I would just reconfirm with them that they do not use peanut oil.
Here's their website: http://www.sals-pizza.com/
Sacena,
Have you actually called this place yourself? You said that you heard from the school via another parent but sometimes communication lines get mixed up. Try calling yourself or even better, go there and ask to see the manager. Ask to read the box that the oil comes in. I have had people tell me peanut oil before and then it turns out that it's actually not. If it really is peanut oil, see if they can order pizza from a different place.
Everyone has the right to my opinion!
It looks like everything will turn out okay. When my son got off the bus yesterday, he told me that he would sit in the captain's office for lunch today and everyone would wash their hands. I felt better, but not completely better. But then this morning, I received a call from the captain. He said he was very worried last night about he can be sure that 100 kids with peanut oil on their hands and face are going to get cleaned up. He offered to have my son go through the morning with regular activities and someone would drive him home before the pizza was even delivered. He might come home in a fire or police chief's car. That will make his day. If the captain ever runs for Sheriff, he has my vote!
As for the pizza, yes I did call the place and they stated they do use peanut oil. That's all I needed to hear. I did E-Mail them later and told them that they should really indicate on their menu that they use peanut oil as people's lives are in danger.
Hopefully, the Sheriff's Dept will change their pizza supplier. It's such a great camp. And it's free!
Thank you everyone for your support and advice!
I'm glad that all is well that ends well but honestly, I can't understand why the camp chose to send your son home before the pizza instead of just ordering different pizza. I mean what is the big deal?

I agree with MimiM. Your DS should not be excluded from any activity. They are going to all this trouble to exclude him when all they have to do is order the pizza from a different place (like the one I suggested above in the same town) to ensure the safety of all their campers. I wouldn't stand for this. Seems like they don't want to be bothered with the responsibility of his safety and want to just "send him home" so they don't have to deal with it and they can sit back, relax, and enjoy "their" pizza.

If it's a free camp, I'm betting that the pizza is being donated. Sounds like they are aware enough and concerned enough that if it were a simple matter of switching vendors, they would. But not everyone gives out free pizza.
That's just my guess--I'm trying to make sense of the situation!

I didn't really feel that he was being excluded. I signed up at the last minute. The camp has the pizza delivered every week for low cost. I don't know if they could have switched vendors so quickly. The main thing is, it didn't bother my son. He got a ride home in the fire captain's car. It was the best part of the entire camp. At the camp graduation, he had the captain sign his shirt and he said he'll keep the shirt forever.
They did say that they were going to do something about the pizza place though.
I was actually glad that he came home early that day. I was just grateful that he made it through the week with no problems

I'm glad this was such a great memory for your son! (My daughter would have loved that royal treatment, too.)
Can't complain about people who 'get it' as well as this!!

With all of the peanut free pizza places I cant imagine why they would put themselves at risk by ordering pizza from a place that uses peanut oil.
Is this a National Chain by any chance? I hope not.
In any case, even with the best care and getting epi on time, there are still instances where it doesnt work. It's very very rare but Epi is not a cure all--even though when it is adminsistered in a timely fashion it almost always works.
Some peanut oils are safe some are not. I could never knowingly take the chance.
Is there any chance of the camp getting pizza from a different source?
And regarding the other questions, hand sanitizer is a gel to destroy bacteria. Peanut protein is not a germ so a disinfectant is not appropriate.
Hand washing (soap, water and paper towels is your best option.)
Take care,
Gina
