Parent information meeting on food allergies at school
Friday, May 6, 2005

What steps need to be taken to keep children with food allergies safe at school? "Parents and school nurses need to work together on an individual plan for each child," said Sharon Schumack, health education coordinator at the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America/New England Chapter, which presents a meeting on the topic Tuesday, May 10, at 7 p.m., at Newton-Wellesley Hospital.

Guest speakers are Jan Hanson and Shelly Creager, founders of Educating for Food Allergies, a consulting firm that advises parents and school systems about safe and effective policies. They will discuss Individual Health Care Plans and Section 504 plans. There will be time for questions and parent networking. The program is free and open to the public.

AAFA/NE worked with state education and public health agencies to develop guidelines for managing life-threatening food allergies in schools, and has educational materials available on the subject.

Jason,

Any chance you could make it? Or find another parent of a food allergic kid to attend? I haven't seen anyone step up to the plate to indicate attendence. This is golden educational opportunity. I'd go myself in a heartbeat, but the commute from California is a bit too long.....

Gary, y'know... a lot of parents I talk to in MA havent let me know about tonight...

I going AFAIK to tomorrow meeting IRT same issues, diff people...

I can only guess that some parents going tonight (to Lexington, while tues. night is in Newton) frequent at least ONE of the 2 or 3 boards I hit... so theres gotta be SOMETHING out there on the topic, and hopefully someone will take notes.

How useful will it be? I hope SOME good comes from it... We are in the same boat when it comes time to send to full day school (Caitlin will be in 1/2 day K next yr -- no lunch/no cafeteria) but the following yr... 1st grade? Full day.

Y'know -- I've never met most of the parents in MA that go to these meetings, but Im sure Ive talked to a boatload of 'em! Whether they know me or not
