Always cough after eating almonds - slight allergy?

My family has what we jokingly call the "-our last name- Choke", because every time we eat a family meal, someone has a choking fit. My mom and I have recently discovered that the choking almost always follows the eating of nuts of some kind, particularly almonds. About 2 minutes after eating almonds, we all experience a tightness in the throat and a temporary choking fit. It is easily calmed by drinking water. Could this be a slight allergy, or possibly a hereditary throat shape? Or does everyone choke after eating almonds?
