I just noticed that nutmeg is listed on FAAN's list of 'foods to avoid for a peanut-free diet'.
I didn't know that nutmeg has peanut in it. Heads up!

I just called McCormick. The rep I spoke with said that none of their spices including NUTMEG have peanuts or treenuts in them.
I will email FAAN directly and find out WHY it is on the list.
!?!
Well - nutmeg does come a "nut"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nutmeg
it's really not a 'true nut' but a drupaceous drupe or dry drupe. Drupes are a hard seed encased in flesh. Almonds are drupes, shea nuts are drupes, coconut is a drupe.

I've never avoided nutmeg in the least, even though I'm TNA. I assume it's b/c I've never had a reaction and it's not botanically related to other nuts I am allergic to (cashew, hazelnut, almond)

The spice nutmeg comes from the outside of a nutmeg whatever that is. It is scraped off and that's nutmeg. So if it is on the outside it is entirely possible it can be contaminated with peanuts? But gee you only use a micron of nutmeg? Still we don't use nutmeg anyway.

I've emailed FAAN to ask why nutmeg is on the list.
McCormick is safe, so I'm wondering if there there are brands of nutmeg that use peanut as a filler - perhaps cheap or imported brands of nutmeg? I'm guessing this is the case, otherwise, why would it be listed between 'beer nuts' and 'cold pressed, expelled, or extruded peanut oil.'
Wow! Quick reponse from Debbie at FAAN.
She asked for the website where I found the info -and said that NUTMEG shouldn't be on the list.
The list I found was not on FAAN's website but gave credit to FAAN for the list,
I checked the list on FAAN's website and NUTMEAT is listed there. I bet the person that transcribed it, wrote NUTMEG by mistake.

Nice work Sherlock! I must have seen that list a long time ago too. I hardly use nutmeg but won't worry now. You live you learn.

I have used nutmeg in cooking because I was told it was safe by our allergist. My son has never had any problems with it.
Everyone has the right to my opinion!
OK, funny story...
When I was first learning to cook, I used to try a lot of my great-grandmother's recipe cards. One day I made brownies and misread "nutmeats" as "nutmeg."
Half a cup of nutmeg. Even the dog wouldn't eat them.
Glad it was a mistake. We use nutmeg here. DS never had a problem with it. Thanks for looking into that, though! I'm glad it was resolved.

I'll bet.
(If it's any consolation, though.... I have a similar story involving a stir fry dish and ginger.)

Adding a p.s. to my above post....
I don't get it. Nutmeg is listed along with all the bad stuff - peanuts, peanut butter, etc. Could it be made WITH peanuts?
