Just letting everyone know, Nestle is now making butterfinger hot cocoa, with peanutbutter. I spoke with a Nestle rep and they said that if it was a questionable risk of crosscontamination it would be labeled.

Hi everyone

I saw this butterfinger hot chocolate at the store and thought UGGGH! I am sick of seeing pb and butterfinger plastered on everything! Is nothing sacred. Just another cross contamination to worry about.

If anyone has a problem with other Nestle Hot Chocolate please alert everyone.

Good luck!

I finally saw this at the store and decided I would check the label of the other cocoas for may contains and didn't see any. I thought I suppose it is possible they could be smart about this and prevent cross contamination but I wondered what exactly the label would say if it did have peanuts ( in bold or thrown in the ingredients somewhere)so I looked at the actual butterfinger cocoa box and I must be out of my mind because I didn't find peanuts listed anywhere as an ingredient or a may contain! It is obvious by the front of the box saying peanut butter whatever and the huge butterfinger that this has to have peanuts! ? I'm going to check again on my next grocery trip because this really bugs me and I would prefer to think I was just in a rush and that because that was already on my No list that maybe I didn't really read correctly or something. I would just really like to think that because a product obviously contains peanut that is no reason to not include it the label unless maybe the y have somehow got flavor from something else other than peanuts? I don't know ...this is just to hard for me to believe so if anyone is due for their shopping trip and is interested in taking a look at this please let me know it was wrong or what? ?

On Sunday, I saw this product in the store too and I was surprised that there was no mention of peanut in the ingredients! I even read the label twice.

Hi
Go to the Nestle Hot chocolate web site and look at frequently asked questions. This is the 3rd question. It state that no nuts are used in making any of their hot chocolates.

an update on this thread...(Oct 2005)

I saw the butterfinger hot cocoa for the first time in the grocery store today...I guess it's been out a few years.

Anyhoot - I called Nestle USA (beverage division) and talked to a very helpful CS rep. In the butterfinger and smore's flavor hot cocoa, it is artificial flavoring. There are no nuts or peanuts in those hot cocoas.

He went to explain that Nestle does not "hide" any of the top 8 allergens under "natural flavorings". He said that if there were any of the top 8 allergens (of which tree nuts and peanuts are in) in a "natural flavoring" it would be listed in the ingredient list and would have their standard bold allergen warning. Additionally, he claims that they (Nestle USA) labels for any and all shared equipment and facilities and trace amounts of allergens.

I went on to inquire about the labeling differences for Canada and USA, and he said that even though the Canadian laws are more stringent, their (Nestle in general) labels to that standard in every country irregardless of how slack the labeling laws may be in that country.

So...I won't be having the Butterfinger or Smores cocoas (he said the Smores has artificial peanut flavor), but I know the regular ones are safe if they are not labeled with a warning.

...and...I trust Nestle that much more.

Adrienne :-)
