Hi everyone,
need some suggestions. My pa daughter (2nd grade) has sever pa. My kindergarten son does too so I need some info to help educate kids in their classrooms about their pa. My daughters class was always good up until this year a few new students and one student has even started making fun and threatening to give her peanuts to kill her. The teacher has called his parents etc. But her and I think it is time to reintroduce the subject to make sure everyone knows how serious the pa is and to encourage teamwork. I want to initiate the idea into my sons kindergarten as well. I know about Allie the Elephant and No Nuts for Me. Is there anything else you guys would recommend. Please let me know. Thanks!!
Just wanted to let you know that disability harassment is against the law; I can`t think of anything more harassing than threatening to kill someone because they have PA. There is a great letter about this dated July 25, 2000 at the following website www.ed.gov/PressReleases/07-2000/PolicyDisabilityharassment.doc. My daughter`s school didn`t seem to think the harassment was a big deal, since they were doing their part to learn the Epipen, have the peanut free table, etc. For me the letter was really helpful. Next time this comes up, I will know the law.
Who is Allie the elephant?
Food Allergy Network has Alexander the Elephant materials (including a video) and another pre-teen video called Food Allergies; Fact of Fiction.
Also there is a program for a Brownie try-it somewhere in the Schools tread that I thought was great. There would be no reason why you couldn't do some of those games / activites in your presentation as well.
Hi PA mom. You were so kind to reply to my problem regarding my son's kindergarten's teacher and her inability to comply with his 504 plan...thankyou!
The first day of school I showed the video that someone refered to from the FAN titled Alexander the Elephant that could not eat peanuts. (It's good) We stopped the video after the animated part, because I was not sure the rest was age appropriate and I did not want to give anyone any ideas. I also read the book and I'm not sure if this is the correct title of the book, but I think it is "Alex goes to school". It also talks about allergies, peanut-free tables and the importance of not sharing food. I then spoke on how my son Dominick is just like them, he loves to play, ride trains, etc. He also like you in another way, do any of you have allergies, how many of you have allergies or know someone who does? Well, his allergy is a little different, he is allergic to peanuts and they can make him very sick. He can never eat, touch, or touch something that has touched peanuts. His teacher, Dominick and his mommy and daddy are going to ask you for your help. Can you help us? Kids love to get involved! You can help us by washing your hands really good. Help Dominick and his classmates remember he can only eat food he brings from home and can never share food. And most importantly, we need your help if Dominick gets sick or asks for help you need to get help right away. Itchy, red bumpy skin, puffy lips, or if it is hard for him to breath please get help right away. I also mentioned that Dominick always has his medicine with him. He carries it in his fanny pack. I showed them the epi-pen and asked them to not touch, or take his medicine because we always want to keep you safe. Of couse, an hour later his teacher gave him food that did not come from home despite his objection...and then again 2 mo. later...but I think the children got it! Good Luck!
thanks for all the help. I am going to get "Allie the Elphant" and I all ready got "The Peanut Butter Jam". I am going to talk to the teacher's about using them as educational tools. Chicago mom you mentioned a Brownie Try It. I am my 2nd graders Brownie leader and I do not find anything about food allergies in my try it book. I read somewhere that Girls Scouts was coming out with a food allergy try it, but have not seen anything. Could you let me know where you found some info and I'll call the Girls Scout Org. Thanks!
Dominick's mom, thanks also for replying I hope everything is going better. I get anxious around Valentine's Day, my daughter had a hospitalized reaction on VDay two years ago. It is hard, talk to your child about the candy they bring home and if it is not labeled throw it away!! My daughter ate what she thought was a chocolate heart, turned out to be Butterfinger Choco heart and it almost killer her. The heart was not labeled. AAgh!!
Good luck everyone.

A friend of mine has done a lot of work in this area during the past two years. She and the principal/vice principal have been working on an educational curriculum on food allergies with I think touches on some of the issues you are experiencing. I'll call her to see if she would be willing to post any of this information. It might be limited, however, because I think she plans on copyrighting her materials. She was working on videotaping her presentation last time I spoke with her about it. Her daughter is in second grade this year also. From what she has told me, it seems to be a "cutting edge" presentation, one which will greatly benefit our school district.
